Shoes for Haiti. One day last week I was checking my email to read a message that St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Waconia (where our children attend school) was launching a “Shoes for Haiti” drive.

After giving it some consideration, I thought St. Victoria Catholic Church and Rising Star Dance Academy may be able to use this information and create a drive of our own.  So I sent the message along.

Without putting much more thought into it, I received an immediate response from Amy Kusber at St. Victoria as well as from Maryann Porter at Rising Star.  Both were ready to get the wheels in motion for a terrific shoe drive.  Action oriented, these women put their skills to the test and got the buzz roaring.

A few days later I stopped at St. Victoria for another reason and came across all these bags.  I didn’t even really consider that this could be the result of that single email.  Then I looked closer to discover that these were truly shoes, and a lot of them!!  I got tears to realize that all these were Shoes for Haiti.

As of Wednesday, January 26th, St. Victoria collected 2,715 pairs of shoes through the services of their Faith Formation students, Confirmation students, and the parishioners.  Rising Star Dance Academy, in both Victoria and Waconia, gathered 255 pairs.

These shoes have been successfully delivered, by no small effort, by the Faith Formation students and Amy Kusber at St. Victoria to Belle Plaine, where they join a larger coalition supported by Soles for Souls.  From Belle Plaine, the shoes will travel by truck to Iowa to be cleaned, sorted, and sent off to Haiti.

The message of this story is simple.  A small gesture can make magical things happen and I am fortunate to play a small role in this amazing act of generosity.

Thought you might enjoy this.  After a recent class tour of the Excelsior Fire Department Fire Station, 8-year old Catherine Moore of Shorewood (just up the road from Victoria) came home to inform the family that the fire hydrant at the end of the street needed to be cleared of snow and ice.  So, with spade and shovel in hand, she set out to clear a three-foot path to and around the fire hydrant.  Excelsior Fire District asks for community assistance in keeping fire hydrants clear of snow, ice, and other debris.  You are never too young to be civic minded.

Informing Doctors.  The exciting news is that we had an Education Booth at a recent gathering of Park Nicollet Primary Care Physicians.  Dr. Murray, our beloved Celiac specialist/researcher/educator at the Mayo Clinic, was the speaker for the Celiac Disease segment and he stopped by our booth prior to his presentation.  (He’s pictured in the center.)  This gave us the opportunity to discuss our information at length.  Then, during his presentation, Dr. Murray recommended to the doctors that they stop by our booth, Celiac Disease Foundation Twin Cities, even telling them exactly where we were located on the floor.  We were grateful for his kind support.  Many of the attending physicians did stop by and it was an amazing opportunity to help get out information regarding Celiac Disease and our support group.

As you can see, we did steal a moment for a photo opportunity.  The gentleman on the right is Ken Hurias.  He is our treasurer of the CDFT (Celiac Disease Foundation Twin Cities chapter).  I am the president.
