To the Editor:

The MCWD's annual Watershed Heroes Awards recognize those who have made significant contributions toward clean water.  A majority of the 2012 recipients have made notable strides against a key threat to the longterm health of the District's lakes and streams:  Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS).

By honoring those who worked to prevent the spread of AIS, the District hopes others will follow their example and join the fight.  Dr. Peter Sorensen pioneered new methods of controlling the spread of common carp and secured state funding for research.  The City of Shorewood became the first city to require boats to be inspected before entering Christmas Lake, The Lake Minnetonka Association Bay Captains raised nearly $600,000 for milfoil control.  Herbert Suerth was a vocal advocate of AIS prevention during his 17-year tenure of the LMCD before retiring in December 2011.

There are thousands more unsung stewards.  It takes a committed effort on many fronts to keep resources healthy.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  I'm a longtime Victoria resident and on the board of directors for Chaska Valley Family Theatre.  We are gearing up for our next production, The Music Man, which will run the first two weekends in March at Chanhassen High School.  I was interested in possibly running an ad in the March issue of the Victoria Gazette, but I'm not sure the timing will work.  Our show runs from March 1st to 10th.  If you could give me some information on pricing, that would be great.  There are a handful of Victoria children, my daughter included, who are in the production, so that might be an angle to play up.  Thanks

To the Editor:

The Carver County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on January 15th to adopt a resolution in support of amending Minnesota's Safe Harbor Act to define all sexually exploited children under the age of 18 as crime victims.  By adopting the resolution, the Commissioners have indicated a commitment to take a leadership role in convening a statewide summit of county leaders around this issue to develop a victim-centered response to eliminate such trafficking of our children.  Carver County is committed to joining other metro counties on the front line in combatting this very serious problem affecting our children and our communities.
