To the Editor:

A loving thank you for your special articles in the June issue of the Gazette about our dear friend Father Elstan.  It was always a positive experience to be with him and to hear a bunch of new jokes.  I have missed him over the years, but I know that now he is in a better home where, I have a feeling, he makes our God chuckle from time to time.

I enjoy the nature scenes in the Gazette, the stories, the memories, the stance for highway safety ... all.  May God continue to bless you and your family.

         My gratitude,

         Mary Nick Eiden, SLW

The fishhook is on page 34 in the big sunflower of the Waterbrooke ad.  You are good at hiding it every month.  Bet you were good at playing Hide and Seek as a child.  Thank you.

Please publish the attached article in the Victoria Gazette .  Optimist International is in the process of forming an Optimist Club in the Chanhassen-Chaska-Victoria community.  Optimist clubs provide youth programs such as internet safety, drug and alcohol prevention, bicycle safety, and childhood cancer.

To the Editor:

Thank you to the families of Victoria Elementary School that contributed an amazing 509 pairs of various footwear for recycling from late April through the end of the school year.

Also, thank you to the Gazette for helping our First Grade Brownie Troop promote footwear recycling in Carver County.  The inclusion of the Girl Scouts’ service project in the Gazette last month was greatly appreciated.

The Recycling Association of Minnesota and Carver County have a recycling program called “Run In and Recycle,” which started in January at the Environmental Center in Chaska.  This program is part of Minnesota’s first shoe recycling program.

A Maplewood company processes the unwanted footwear by grinding up and re-manufacturing it into absorbent material for oil spill cleanup kits which are used worldwide.

Any type of footwear can be recycled -- tennis shoes, hiking boots, winter boots, dress shoes, water shoes, flip flops, leather shoes, heels, even roller blades and ice skates.  This is a creative new use for the often ignored, yet valuable, materials in our old shoes.

All Carver County residents are encouraged to bring old unwanted footwear to the Environmental Center, 116 Peavey Circle, Chaska, to be remanufactured into oil spill cleanup kits.

To the Editor:

Hi, Mom.  The kids and I slept in the tent on Wednesday night for fun, just right here in the yard.  As we were going to sleep Gunnar said, “Maybe God is by our beds.”

I suppose he figured God is by our beds since we say our nighttime prayers there.  Maybe he was concerned that God might not find us in the tent to keep us safe.  Of courses this launched a half an hour of fascination and questions and we finally fell asleep.

The kids slept great.  I kept sitting up and looking out the tent windows, especially when a lone coyote howled from the nearby woods.  Christopher was in the house about 15 feet away with the window wide open, but when I called for him there was no answer.  Some knight in shining armor.

To the Editor:

My mom, Marge Diethelm, lives in Victoria, as I am sure you know.  She would like me to pass on the following information for inclusion in the next edition of the Gazette.

On May 19th I completed my Master of Public Affairs (MPA) degree with a concentration in Public and Nonprofit Management.  My final GPA was 3.9 which qualifies me for membership in Pi Alpha Alpha, the national honor society for public affairs and administration.

Further, my thesis project was honored at the graduation ceremony with the Gross Family Award for best student group project.

Currently I work at the University of Minnesota, College of Medicine, and Department of Pediatrics as a Program Coordinator, where I administer a clinical trial for children with lysosomal storage disorders.

As a 1983 graduate of Chaska High School and a 1988 graduate of the University of MN with a B.S. degree in Genetics and Biology, I think going back to school as an “adult” student should be celebrated along with the academic achievements of younger individuals.
