The Lakeside Building

March 27th, 2014.  It’s owned by Hartman Companies, also the general contractor for its construction.  The brothers Terry and Jerry Hartman are the principals.  Said Terry, “Jerry is the Project Manager.  He’s the boots on the ground.”

The Lakeside Building, which is the newest construction in Victoria’s Central Business District, is located between Stieger Lake and Stieger Lake Lane, across the street from the Victoria House and Vic’s Bar and Grill — a block from “Main Street.”

asdfasdf

April 10th, 2014.  I drive down Stieger Lake Lane practically every day on my way to the Post Office, so it’s natural I observed construction progress of the new Lakeside Building.  That’s the Stieger Lake condo building in the background on the left.

April 20th, 2014.  Does anybody remember that this property used to be quite an eyesore in Victoria?  I do.  It used to be owned by C.H. Carpenter Lumber and there never was much of a “lake view” in this area.  As matter of fact, for most of Victoria’s history, people hardly realized or cared that the city was located next to a lake.

April 30th, 2014.  There were some lumber storage sheds on the property,” said Terry Hartman.  “The sheds were originally coal storage sheds.  The railroad delivered coal and it was distributed out to the community from those buildings.”  The railroad track itself was dismantled through Victoria in 1981.

May 5th, 2014.  What happened to those old coal/lumber buildings?  Replied Terry, “In 2008 we moved the buildings with the help of the Victoria Fire Department.  In 2012 we utilized some of the extra soil from the Highway 5 improvement project to level out the site.”

May 18th, 2014.  Hartman Brothers (Terry and Jerry) purchased the site and the sheds from C.H. Carpenter, but only after pursuing a public use for the property.  “In 2007 we hired Gene Ernst, landscape architect, to sketch out a public use vision for the property because of the close proximity to the Regional Trail, Stieger Lake, and Carver Park,” said Terry.

June 4th, 2014.  Continued Terry, “The City passed on that vision and ownership idea so in 2008 Hartman Brothers LLC purchased the property.”

June 5th, 2014.  Residents might be interested to know that patrons of the Victoria House and Vic’s Bar and Grill still have a view of the lake from their outdoor patios as well as from their inside dining rooms.

June 20th, 2014.  And when the public plaza on the left, west, side of the Lakeside Building is completed, the lake will be even more prominent in Victoria.

June 23rd, 2014.  The upper floor will be home to several business offices.  The ground level will house an ice cream shop on the east (left) side called “The Social” (owned by Brandon and Ashlee Wallis who also own School of the Wise restaurant in the Clocktower Building) and plus Dr. Kandace Johnson and “Power of Life” on the east side (right) side.

August 1st, 2014.  Thank you, Hartman Brothers, for continuing to clean up Victoria and help make it an attractive place to live, work, and play.
