by Sue Orsen Other grocery stores have been proposed for Victoria over the years, including a “Cooper’s” for the Leuthner Well site directly west of City Hall and, most recently, a “Coburn’s” for the 13.5 acres west of the City Bridge. These proposals fell through for various reasons, partly because those particular grocers didn’t want Victoria as much as Victoria wanted them. Well, this time the wanting seems equally balanced. Fresh Seasons Market and the City of Victoria want each other in an equally big way. So far, the Victoria City Council has unanimously approved preliminary steps in the forward process. A Breath of Fresh (Seasons) Air! |
Dale Riley, President of Fresh Seasons Market, and Mary Page, Manager of the store at Glen Lake. |
Tom Wartman, left, and Dale Riley are co-owners of the Fresh Seasons Market in the Glen Lake area of Minnetonka. |
I drove out to the Fresh Seasons Market in the Glen Lake area of Minnetonka on Tuesday, July 21st, and received a generous and gracious firsthand tour of the store from Dale Riley, a partner in ownership. The other partner, Tom Wartman, was called to an unscheduled meeting in Victoria that morning so I returned to Glen Lake and met up with Tom on July 25th, also seeing Dale again. The store, which is similar to that proposed for Victoria, is impressive inside and out and reminded me of a Kowalski’s but with more emphasis on groceries and less on crown molding. It’s very pleasing to the eyes and kinder on the Visa. I saw customers doing big and little shopping here, with access to fresh baked caramel rolls, sushi, and Angus Pride beef as well as canned goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh coffee beans, glistening rotisserie chicken, even gifts and fresh floral arrangements. How does one begin to talk about 27,000 square feet of groceries except to identify some of the particulars! Dale greeted practically every customer by name and they knew him as well. When he calls it a neighborhood grocery store, he means it. It is not a Cub or a Rainbow or a Super Target. Most shoppers can find everything they want or need at Fresh Seasons, with the opportunity to choose from familiar name brands as well as the “Our Family” brand that is less expensive while retaining good quality. A jug of white grapefruit juice bearing the Our Family label, for example, is one dollar less than Ocean Spray. Their wholesale supplier is Nash Finch. The downtown Victoria store would be constructed on Quamoclit Street where the row of single family homes was recently demolished. Parking lot for the store would be constructed on the site of the C.H. Carpenter building which has seen deterioration since closing its doors in 2006. |
