The Scoop

at City Hall

Where are the three daughters and their families?  Beth Piwnica, husband Bill, and daughter Christine also live at Deer Run in Victoria.  Joanie Siefkes and children Emily and Robby live in Lakeville.  Kathie Borrell, husband John, and children Clay and Kate live in Eden Prairie.

Says Stan, “I tell people I have been blessed with the most wonderful wife, the most wonderful children, and the most wonderful grandchildren.  I just showed up.”

About their grandbabies he says, “God allows you to love your own children all over again through their children.”

About his Valentine, he says, “She is my best friend.  I always say I married my trophy wife 48 years ago.  We still hold hands.  Jayne is a very good cooker and I thank her for every meal.  I never take her for granted.”

Says Jayne, who loves to make a good pot roast, “I can make a meal with nothing in the house.  Our grandchildren love Nana’s homemade pizza and tacos.  It’s a big deal for them.  For Valentine’s dinner I’ll make King Crab Legs for me and Stan.”

And then, if it’s not too icy outside, Stan will go for a walk.  “I started walking every morning at 5:30 and logged it every day since July 12th, 2004.  It lowered my blood pressure.  And it’s an attempt to keep my school boy figure.”

Jayne prefers spending time in her office downstairs where she makes her own greeting cards, “develops” and prints her own digital photographs, organizes photo albums, arranges her miniature shoe collection, plays computer games, reads, plays piano, and waits for spring and getting back into her flower garden.  “I love lilies,” she said and pointed to a colorful photo display of her blooming lilies.

Jayne also puts the neighborhood Bible Study high on her list of favorite activities.  Daughter Beth leads that Bible Study “and is very good at it,” she said.

About their “retirement” in 2002, it’s a phantom idea to both Stan and Jayne, who keep their hands in a few things here and there.  Stan quotes  what Colonel Sanders used to often say to him, “A person will rust out rather than wear out.”  The Colonel died in 1980 at the age of 90.  There was no rust.  The Hamerski’s will not rust either.

***

Thank you, Stan and Jayne, for your story, your laughter, and the copy of Claire de  Lune.  I suspect several more chapters remain to be written and several more photographs remain to be taken.  The name of  that field game you played together long ago could just as well have been “Capture the Heart.”  Happy Valentine Days.
