Robo Saints. St. Joseph Catholic School in Waconia participated in the Food Factor Challenge in November at Plymouth Middle School, competing against 16 other schools and won the chance to advance to State Competition in St. Paul in January. In the Food Factor Challenge, teams build, test, and program an autonomous robot using Legos (LEGO MINDTORMS NXT) to solve a set of Food Safety Missions. The team also won the Innovative Design Award for their Robot. Robo Saints interviewed Victoria's local restaurants -- School of the Wise, Cuzzy's Victoria House, and the Dairy Queen -- along with Island View Dining of Waconia, Mackenthun's, and Appert Foods. It was wonderful to see the business owners help the kids come up with ideas and take the time to answer many questions. We are lucky to have a great community that supports our children. Thank you for all you do. Front: Jason Folz with the team's robot. A Season for Grandparents. This is a picture of our granddaughter Courtney Grunewald, a swimmer for Elk River High School. Courtney went to State three straight years. Last year she took 6th place in the backstroke. This year she broke the Elk River record in the butterfly and took 5th place at State. She was the only junior girl nominated for the Excel Award. This award is for a student who demonstrates outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, and fine arts. Another granddaughter, Kayla Lindeman of Victoria (in last month's Gazette), went to State her first year as a diver for Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria and took 9th place. Our grandson Michael Fritz of Maple Grove also almost made it back to State playing football for Holy Family. We saw all but two games. Last year they took 2nd. In one day, Ron and I drove to Willmar to see Kayla dive and win 1st, then drove to St. Cloud and saw Courtney take 1st in the butterfly, and then raced back to Chaska to watch the last half of Holy Family lose to Fairmont in the playoff game. What a day! As proud grandparents we had quite a year and I am sure there will be many more. Bonnie Fritz Victoria, Minnesota
Five Seniors. The Holy Family Catholic High School football team won their third section championship in 2011. The Fire finished with a 7-1 regular season record and a 10-2 overall record while advancing to the Class 3A State Tournament. Michael Roane and Ryan Dahl were named Class 3A All-State. Pictured above are five Holy Family Seniors who are also all alumni of Guardian Angels Catholic School in Chaska. Front (l-r): Ryan Dahl of Carver, Adam Reznick of Victoria. Sugar and Spice. The CCHA Girls U10A Hockey Team took home the 2nd Place trophy from the Hastings Sugar and Spice Tournament held December 9th-11th. The girls swept past Burnsville (4-2) and the home team of Hastings (3-1) to secure a spot in the championship game against a tough Cottage Grove team, whose goalie had given up zero goals in the tournament thus far. After two scoreless periods in the championships game, Cottage Grove went on to score two goals in the third period, winning the game 2-0. Front (l-r): Lily Hanson (goalie).
