DR. CHAD LORENZ CHOOSES VICTORIA

COMMENTING THAT ‘IT’S A GORGEOUS TOWN”

Dr. Chad Lorenz, who recently opened a clinic in downtown Victoria, introduced himself to city councilmembers on Monday, June 13th.  "I've been open since the beginning of the month and I've had a pretty good welcome," he said.  "It's exciting to be invited to talk about what I do."

Dr. Lorenz, a resident of Chaska, said he attended the University of St. Thomas for undergradduate, Master's, and doctoral studies in counseling and psychology.  "I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist in Minnesota.  I've had a practice in St.  Paul, Minneapolis, and Maple Grove."

He said he does family therapy and psychology, children's therapy, parent-child relational therapy and couple's therapy.  Why did he choose Victoria?  "Victoria is a pretty distinct blend of rural and urban," he replied.  "It's a gorgeous town."

Councilmember Kim Roden asked if his services overlap the services offered at Kid Talk in Victoria.  "I don't think we'll overlap," he said.

His goal is a capacity of 3 or 4 full time practitioners and 2 or 3 part time.  Currently he operates at 15 client-hours per week.

Asked Councilmember Tom Strigel, "Do you see things you need that aren't here?"

"Maybe a couple more parking spaces," said Dr. Lorenz.

"Did you consider other locations?" asked Councilmember Strigel?

"Yes," he said, "Chaska, Chanhassen, and Waconia."

Stated Mayor Mary Thun, "We're glad you selected Victoria.  Welcome!'

VICTORIA APPLIES FOR GRANT DOLLARS

TO HELP CONNECT COMMUNITY  TRAILS

On June 27th, Victoria city councilmembers authorized staff to apply for a grant in the amount of $413,400 to extend a paved bike trail at 86th Street all the way north along the east side of Bavaria Road to the intersection of Hwy 5.

It is a 20% matching grant, which means that if awarded the city will need to  provide $82,860 toward the cost.  Community Development Director Holly Kreft said the trail would better connect the Victoria and Chaska communities.  She added that a leg of the trail would be graded as part of the 2012 Hwy 5 improvement project.

Councilmember  Jim Crowley asked, "Would it be possible for the City of Victoria to prepare an overall plan and funding plan for trails in Victoria?  I'd like to see how we will get it all connected."

Replied Parks & Rec Director Ann Mahnke, "We do have a Parks and Trails Master Plan.  A majority of those trail connections are developer driven.  The system has been pretty well mapped out.  I will get that plan to you."

Added Councilmember Crowley, "I'd like to see the ramifications of getting the links and costs to complete a trail system."

Councilmember Tom O'Connor asked about the city's Park Dedication Fund and the Facilities Fund.  Director Mahnke said each fund currently contains about $400,000 but will be at negative balances by the time all the trails are completed.

Mayor Mary Thun pointed out that the portion of trail currently under consideration for construction along Bavaria Road (if the grant money is awarded) will give access to the Regional Trail if and when it is continued north of the intersection along Rolling Acres Road.  The grant is through the Metropolitan Council and its Transportation Enhancement Program.

The City of Victoria also voted support for the City of Chanhassen's request for funding from the same group, for a trail along the south side of Hwy 5 from the entrance gate of the Arboretum to the intersection at Century Boulevard.

VICTORIA SELLS TINY PIECE OF PROPERTY

NOT VALUABLE AS STAND-ALONE LOT

Councilmembers authorized the sale of 7,405 square feet of city-owned property It translates to about .17 acres and is valued at $2,500 by the Carver County Assessor.  The unbuildable parcel was purchased many years ago by the City of Victoria for the potential extension of Virginia Drive, which will not be extended.

Holly Kreft, Victoria Community Development Director, stated that $2,500 was used as a base bid, and that the adjacent five property owners were notified of the sale.  Three bids were submitted, ranging from $2,611 to $3,733.  "We chose the highest bid," said Holly.  "The parcel wasn't worth anything as a stand-alone lot."

It was purchased by Harvey and Wendy Kornberg, who are interested in combining it with parcels they currently own to potentially construct a new home in the area.
