To the Editor

Hi.  I am contacting you to let you know that District 112 fifth graders will be at the Church By The River having their annual Fifth Grade Debates.  If you can come at any time during our day and sit in, we would love to have you.  Hope you can join us.

To the Editor:

Dorothy Anderson is a teacher at Our Savior Lutheran School in Excelsior who is retiring after 24 years of teaching service.  Mrs. Anderson devoted her career to sharing the love of Jesus in her teaching.  Many considered her among their favorite teachers.  At the end of a long and successful career, Mrs. Anderson has had a profound effect on the spiritual, moral, and academic lives of many students, including  children she currently teaches and has taught who reside in Victoria.

Mrs. Anderson received her Associate of Arts Degree from Concordia College in St. Paul in 1959 and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and Minor in History at Concordia College in River Forest, IL, in 1962.

She taught at Trinity Lutheran in Conklin, MI; Trinity Lutheran in Fort Wayne, IN; St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran School in Addison, IL; Addison Public School; Lutheran and Public Schools in Cleveland, OH; Livonia, MI; Chaska, MN; Minnetonka, MN; Shakopee, MN; Wayzata, MN; and Deephaven, Minnewashta, St. John’s Catholic and St. Therese Catholic Schools.  In 1984 she joined Our Savior Lutheran.  In June of 2000 she received the Teacher of the Year Award from Walmart.  Mrs. Anderson is a most beloved teacher and will be missed.

My heart is sad for our loss, even though Paradise is always where we knew Father Elstan was headed.  His presence was so joyous to be in.  I know you visited him so very often.  Father Elstan made a great difference in my life.  He welcomed me in that funny endearing way into St. Victoria.  I felt so comfortable with him and loved the times when he and my friend Frankie and others came together for a meal or for fun.

Oh, dear, dear Father Elstan.  When he left St. Victoria years ago there was a huge empty space left behind.  The memory is so clear for me, of when you and Allan and friends passed through Wautoma, Wisconsin, and onto Indian River, Michigan, to deliver him as the precious cargo.  He was, as you entitled his book, Prints of a Priest, truly a prince of a priest.  Father Elstan left an imprint on all of us, an imprint of blessed kindness and goodness.

My first grade Girl Scout Brownie Troop is hoping to spread news to the community about recycling footwear.  Were you aware it is available locally?  Attached are photos of the girls doing their part to promote shoe recycling at our Victoria Elementary School.  They are excited to realize they can make a difference.  It would be rewarding for the girls to see their efforts recognized in the Gazette.  I am including more information on what they are doing and how anyone can recycle their own footwear.  All the girls in the attached photos are Victoria residents.  Thanks.

To the Editor:

As Memorial Day arrives, we take this time to remember those who gave what Abraham Lincoln called, “the last full measure of devotion.”  And as we gather at monuments to the fallen and attend memorials in their honor, we must reflect on the lasting ideals of America for which they fought:  liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  This Memorial Day let us honor the heroes that our nation has lost, the men and women currently serving, and the families of both.  Most importantly, let us remember that the cost of freedom is a debt far greater than we can ever truly repay.
