GAZETTE

June 2012

May 3rd, 2012

Congratulations to the City of Victoria residents who took the pledge to conserve water in the online National Mayors' Challenge for Water Conservation and made the City of Lake and Parks a winner!

The competing cities in the nationwide contest, sponsored by the Wyland Foundation, were placed in three categories  from small, mid, and large-sized cities within regional divisions.  Victoria captured the Midwestern mid-sized city title.

Other winning cities were Laguna Beach and Manhattan Beach, California; South Shore, Kentucky; Charlestown, New Hampshire; Fort Pierce, Florida; Quakertown, Pennsylvania; Greeley, Colorado; Charlottesville, Virginia; Toms River, New Jersey; Madison, Wisconsin; and a Minnesota neighbor, Eden Prairie.

The final results were announced at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 3rd.  Now the contest participants in the winning cities have a chance at the over 1,000 water conservation related prizes including a Toyota Prius c Hybrid.  Winners will be notified in approximately two weeks

At least until next year's Earth Month contest, Mayor Mary Hershberger Thun and the citizens of Victoria have bragging rights as a town tops in the nation for caring about water conservation.

I saw my letter about the Water Conservation Challenge in the May issue of the Gazette.  Thank you, and I will try to follow up the story if any Victorians are prize winners in the accompanying contest for those who took the pledge.

I would also like to thank our City of Victoria Mayor Mary Hershberger Thun for jumping on board and her staff for quick and efficient work.  City Clerk Jennifer Kretsch managed the press releases.  Community Development Director Holly Kreft contacted the Victoria neighborhood groups by email to notify them of the contest.

Director Kreft told me in an email that most groups gave her positive feedback immediately about joining the challenge.  And judging by the following anecdote, the neighborhood group email network is responsible and vital in Victoria.  After alerting neighborhoods, Kreft noticed not only Victoria rapidly climbing the contest's ranks, but suddenly so was the City of Excelsior.  Then Kreft thought of a correlation.

The contest's zip code-based voting might have had Victoria's north end neighborhoods being counted for the wrong city because of their Excelsior zip codes.  Kreft protected their future votes by sending the north-enders an email asking them to use the Victoria zip 55386 on their entries.  Immediately, Victoria's votes began to climb again.

Finally, thank you to the citizens of Victoria for making the City of Lake and Parks known nationwide for their commitment to the environment.

Californians do not seem to have the same idea of what a deadline means as  Midwesterners do.  I called the Wyland Foundation today, and now the individual prize winners will be contacted sometime next week by email, listed online at the mywaterpledge.com site, and a press release will be sent to all mayors' offices of the winning cities with the complete winners' list.  However, the drawing for the top prize, the Prius, was conducted as scheduled on May 22nd, and the winner was from Laguna Beach, California.
