Liz Traxler, daughter of Bill and Anne Traxler of Victoria, is one of 52 Minneapolis-area girls honored by their high schools as Athena Award recipients.  Liz is a senior at Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria.  The Athena has been awarded annually for 35 years to a high school’s top senior female student-athlete.

Liz Traxler is a multi-talented athlete.  She excels in soccer as well as in basketball.  She has earned a total of 7 varsity letters during her career at Holy Family and has been a captain in two different sports.

Liz quickly excelled in athletics at Holy Family, earning a spot on the varsity soccer team her freshmen season.  She finished her soccer career at Holy Family by being named to the All-State Soccer Team by the Girls Soccer Coaches Association.  She was named to the Wright County All-Conference team all four years of playing soccer and was Holy Family’s team MPV her junior and senior seasons.  Liz holds the school record in goals (27) in a season and also holds the school record of goals (56) in a career.

Liz also excelled in basketball where she played point guard for the Section Five Runner-Up, Holy Family.  She is a three-year starter in basketball where she has garnered All-Conference awards her junior and senior seasons.  She was all named to the All-Tournament teams for the subsection as well as the NYA Holiday Tournament this past season and the KDUZ/KARP All Area Teams.  Liz is the single season record holder for steals in a season as well as Holy Family’s record holder in assists in a season and career.

Holy Family girls’ soccer coach Jorge Oconitrillo suggests, “Sometimes leaders do not need to be very expressive to lead a group.  Liz led the team by example, not using words.  The group admired her for being a hard worker and for her dedication to the game and the school.  She didn’t need to use words to tell people that they needed to work harder or increase their intensity.  Just by looking at her and seeing her attitude, the rest of the players knew that Liz was raising the bar really high and they needed to follow.  She handled this responsibility with humility.  She knew she was the best but she never used that to put anyone down.  She was more than a leader; she was an example to follow.”

Every student at Holy Family leaves their print in the foundation of the school.  Liz leaves her print of solid principles, dedicated service, and commitment of teamwork, which will serve as a building block for the younger generations of girls to come.  Liz is looking at attending the University of St. thomas to continue her basketball career.
