To the Editor: I have a home here in Victoria. This is the place my wife and I chose to raise our family. It is a safe area for our children to grow and play. We even have a sidewalk along the street. We have no pets. We like it that way. Now that we are talking about pets ... Why can’t people make their dogs pee and poop in their own yard? Why must my lawn be stained? I have a frequent visitor who walks their dog on the piece of lawn between the road and the sidewalk. I have tried to communicate the dislike that I have for the action, but they insist it is public property and they can do as they wish. Can you help? Thank you. Joe Birr Victoria, Minnesota
EDITOR’S NOTE: If anyone sees themselves in the above letter, maybe you could try to do the P&P away from other people’s yards and lawns. It’s just common courtesy, which should be more common everywhere.
To the Editor: Is spring going to be with us soon? Sue, cuddle up in this blanket (on my picture postcard) and have a wonderful Mother’s Day. Found your fishhook on Pastor Jones puzzle on page 19. Ethel Schneider Shakopee, Minnesota
To the Editor: Can’t emphasize enough how much I enjoyed the feature story in the April issue of the Gazette about Jeff Hartman. The Hartman family has done so much for Victoria and yet they fly under the radar. They are soft spoken, humble people who do not seek attention, but they are very deserving of our accolades and thanks. Speaking personally, Jeff was instrumental in the building of the Deer Run Golf Course and vital in the reshaping of the course over the years. Jeff’s company is the premier golf course renovator in the Midwest. But no matter how busy he was, he always found time to help us (and we needed a lot of help), even with non-golf related problems. For example, one busy Saturday morning I dragged Jeff over to Timberwall to help get a planter to install the driving range clock. I didn’t know what I was doing, and wanted it done right because it is a memorial to Mark Bratrud. We got it done, and I’m very proud of it, but Jeff is the reason it worked out -- like a million other things at Deer Run G.C. Thanks for telling his story. To the Editor: Hi, Sue. Here’s your dollars for ‘07 and ‘08. I probably owe you interest too. Keep up the great work. And come to Stillwater! Thanks. Kathy Oertel Stillwater, Minnesota
To the Editor: Here is my check for $15. I really like getting your Gazette. Keep up the good work. Diane Pfarr LeSueur, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hi, Sue. You may not know me. However, I am sure that you remember my wife, Mavis Schroeder. Mavis was a part time clerk in the Victoria Post Office for 14 years. She is so busy in retirement and, I might add, loving retirement and travel. I have something for you to consider for your Notes and Quotes section. I believe it is original: “The moment you waste will never return.” This is one that I have regularly tried to instill into my faculty and students for many years. I was with Mayer Lutheran High School as teacher, principal, and eventually as superintendent for 38 years. After about seven years of retirement, I was asked to fill in as acting principal at a small elementary school. Soon I will enter my third year of acting. This is at St. John’s Lutheran School in Norwood Young America. I am loving it, just as Mavis is loving having me out of her hair. Erlen Schroeder Mayer, Minnesota
