MORE SINGLE FAMILY HOMES PLANNED

VICTORIA TO BECOME A “PULSATING” PLACE

*Council approved the preliminary plat as requested by Scott Schmitt and the Clearwater Development for the Swain property on the north side of Schutz Lake.  The  development is proposed to become 18 single family lots, five of them on the lake, with a cul de sac 1,300 feet in length.    It was reported that there were no serious concerns from the Victoria Fire Department about length of the cul de sac.  It was also reported that MnDOT would approve an egress onto Hwy 7 that would only be right (east) bound, not left (west) bound.

*Council approved a concept plan for Bavaria Acres, an 8-lot subdivision located east of Bavaria Road and south of 82nd Street.  Each of the 8 lots will be about one acre in size.  Said the developer Daryl Snader of Cornerstone Development on April 24th, “I like the rural feel here.  I like the bigger lots.  I hope to build my own house there.  I’m trying to fit my own lifestyle so when my kid overthrows a ball it doesn’t go in the neighbor’s yard.”

*Steve Sarvi reported, “We have proposed drawings from District 112 for the second sheet of ice at the Field House.  Yes, they can plan to take out the Acorn House but they’d have to give us space.”  He said a large parking lot is proposed for the space currently occupied in the area of the totlot.  Said Jim Paulsen, “This is becoming an urban space.  The arena will have seating for 800 people.  This is going to become a pulsating place.”

*Council approved the water obstacle permit for Greg Kurowski on behalf of the Schutz Lake Skiers Association.  Stated Kim Roden, “There were no complaints.  Obviously it’s a non-issue.  They’ve earned their right on the consent agenda.”

*Council approved the hiring of Anne Peglow and Noelle Miller as part time staff for the Field House and Park and Recreation Department.

*Council approved the hiring of Kelly Grinnell as an Accountant at Victoria City Offices, replacing the Finance Technician, and working with Finance Director Jylan Johnson.

*Council accepted a $50 donation from Bill and Elaine Scholl to the Victoria Fire Department.

*Council accepted a $200 donation from Lorraine Braunworth to the Victoria Fire Department.

*Council approved a request from the Business Development Committee for the city to purchase new banners for the downtown light fixtures along Hwy 5.  The banners will sport a prominent “V” for Victoria symbol, have a life span of three to five years, with a cost not to exceed $1,600.

*Reported Mayor Thun, “I’ve been approached by the Chanhassen Rotary.  They would like to sponsor a Rotary in Victoria.”

*Reported Steve Sarvi about School District 112 and a  second sheet of ice at the Field House, “They’re looking for a September groundbreaking.”

*Reported Holly Kreft, “We don’t have a firm timeline yet as to when demolition and construction will start at the Creamery site.  Everything is moving forward.”  Steve said the groundbreaking will not be earlier than July.  On April 24th she reported, “The developer is currently in the construction design phase.”

*Engineer Jack Griffin, TKDA, reported that bids for the 2008 street improvement projects came in lower than the engineer estimates.  Northwest Asphalt was the low bidder.  Council expressed concern about identity of the subcontractors and asked for disclosure and transparency.  Said Jack, “We’ve gotten favorable references on Northwest.”  Council accepted the low bid.

*Michael Comb, a resident at Victoria Circle, received a variance to turn his one-car garage into a 24-foot wide two-car garage.  This was a compromise from the original request for a three-car garage, which would have obstructed the neighbors’ view of Church Lake.  “We don’t want to lose all of our ability to see the lake,” said Ralph Olinger.  Said City Attorney Mike Norton, “When granting a variance you have to look at hardship of the applicant as well as adverse impact on other properties.”  He said a one-car garage is a hardship and a three-car garage would have significant impact.”  Thus the compromise.

*Council accepted $350 from the Victoria Lions and $750 from District 112 Community Education toward the city’s Summer Concerts in the Park series.

*Three new members of the Parks & Rec Committee are Heather Cole, David Clayton, and Earl Schaub.
