Sleeping Giant. This “Atlantic Giant” pumpkin will weigh well over 100 pounds. As a youngster, I grew up around farmland and a large family garden. My interest in it has never diminished. If anything, you build on it as the years go by, as any gardener will tell you. I plan, plant, weed, and harvest. Most of the time my wife Barbara helps with some picking and canning, and she really knows how to use and prepare what we pick. Living on the quiet north side of Pierson Lake has allowed me to exercise my eclectic tastes in home gardening and horticulture. Kurt Zuppke Victoria Lion, Minnesota

The Kirke Lachen Park project is a partnership between the City of Victoria and By the Woods Garden Buddies Program. Laura Wood, CEO, By the Woods, and Gretchen Cashmore, Garden Buddies Coordinator, approached the City for a community project, and the Kirke Lachen Educational Walk was created The concept was to create an area that was educational in nature, environmentally friendly, and a place where neighbors and visitors could stop and rest or eat a picnic lunch. The park previously housed a tennis court that was in disrepair and was removed by the City in 2007. Renovation of the park allowed for a more environmentally friendly atmosphere and a beautiful trail head for the LRT. The park includes a quarter-acre site that has several different rain gardens located within it. The community planting project was held on Saturday, September 6th. With the help of 30 to 40 volunteers, the entire park was planted in four hours. Ann Mahanke Director of Park & Rec/Field House Victoria, Minnesota
