Kim Roden 7223 Lilac Lane Since 2001. Family: Married to Jerry Moja for 27+ years; one adult son Eric and daughter in law Katy. Constant family companion Max, our 12-year old Kerry Blue Terrier.
1) Roots. I grew up in Minnesota and am a lifelong Minnesotan. My husband and I started cross-country skiing in Carver Park while living in Minnetonka and decided we wanted to live where we could enjoy all the outdoor activities the City of Lakes and Parks has to offer. My husband is a member of Victoria’s Park and Recreation Committee and also a member of the Carver County Parks Committee. 2) Education/Work. I have a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas, a Master of Arts degree in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Mass Communications, also from the U of MN. I am a graduate of the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute, which is an accelerated leadership program for female executives in the telecommunications industry. I have 30 years of business experience in the energy and telecommunications industries. I held leadership positions for nearly 12 years with CenterPoint Energy and have served on the senior management teams for Time Warner Cable and now Comcast. Currently, I am Region Vice President for Comcast. 3) Reason for running. Serving the citizens of Victoria has been a very rewarding experience. When I first ran for City Council four years ago, I had spent three years on the Victoria Planning Commission, allowing me to learn about the issues and making recommendations to the City Council. I have always enjoyed building the capacity of any organization I have been affiliated with. As a growing community we have once chance to get it right, and along with other neighbors and residents I want to continue to build our community. 4) Improving Victoria. I am committed to Victoria and believe my seven-plus years of experience would be an asset to the community. Originally, I ran when the City was experiencing tremendous growth in the residential housing market. Now we have a pause in our growth, which is a great time to complete strategic planning to build the community we want Victoria to become: connected and healthy. We want to encourage trails, create destinations to promote a sense of unity and small town feel, establish high high quality inclusive neighborhoods, execute thoughtfully and in a fiscally responsive manner, deliver high quality services, match our City budget to the real estate market, and hold the tax rate flat. 5) Characteristics of a Councilmember. Honest, taking actions consistent with words spoken, respecting others. Forward looking, inspiring and engaging others. Fair, welcoming input and feedback, compassion to different views. Broad minded, making decisions for the greater good, welcoming change. Competent and committed, communicating effectively. 6) Expectation of citizens. The only expectation I have is that citizens do what they can to help improve the community, such as maintaining one’s home, reading local news, voting, remaining engaged and interested. 7) Safeguarding transparency. The way to do this is to discuss City business at City meetings. I believe our City Clerk and City Administrator make every effort to assist the Council in complying with the law. 8) Parking. I believe that retailers who are investing their own risk capital and who have hired their own consultants will be the first to tell us if they don’t believe they have adequate parking. I think the Council should continue to review our shared parking policy to ensure it can accommodate increased levels of activity for both current and future retailers and commercial establishments. 9) Lofty purpose. Remember we are spending the public’s money and it should be for a public purpose. Provide safety and adequate infrastructure while planning for emergencies. Avoid competing with private business. Do public business in the clear light of day. Hold referendums for building multi-dollar public facilities. Read and understand the budget of the City. 10) Council time. If you want something to be done, ask a busy person: it’s really true. People who are committed to Victoria will find the time, whether they have personal or professional obligations. It takes organizational skills, discipline, commitment, energy, and a good sense of humor helps.
