To the Editor: We were both shocked and saddened to learn last week of the passing of one of our Victoria Planning Commissioners, Bud Hiivala. He served on the Planning Commission for over 10 years, and some of the major planning projects that he worked on include the Laketown annexation, the Field House, and the Holy Family Catholic High School. While on the Planning Commission, Bud possessed a real passion for ensuring the community had a well connected trail system that everyone could access and enjoy. Anytime the issue of new residential development came up, Bud was the first to inquire about the plans for new trails in the area and how they could be connected into the overall trail system. The extensive trail system we all enjoy today is a living legacy of the foresight and energy that he brought to the Commission. The City of Victoria is a better place to live due to his concerted efforts. Bud was a dedicated public servant who devoted countless hours helping the city plan for the future. His honesty, fairness, and insight will be greatly missed by his fellow Commissioners. With heartfelt respect, The Victoria Planning Commission Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hello, Sue. My name is Char Hanson, formerly Charlotte Diethelm, oldest of Charlie and Joyce Diethelm. I used to get the Gazette delivered to my home, thanks to my wonderful stepmother Norma Diethelm, but have not received it in some years now. I would like to know what I have to do to start receiving it again. I don’t have the internet at my home and don’t get online very often, so if you could please send me the information, I would greatly appreciate it. Char Hanson Fountain, Minnesota
To the Editor: I regret to report the death of Herb Schmieg from cancer. Herb had worked in Systems before being recruited by Ross Perot and going to Texas. He was part of the gang from Victoria who drove with me to Prudential in the “old days.” Ron Holtmeier Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: If you think you have problems, listen to mine. When I got to work last week, I found that a tornado had knocked some bricks off the top of our building. So I rigged up a beam with a pulley at the top of the building and hoisted up a couple of barrels full of bricks. When I had fixed the building, there were a lot of bricks left over. So I hoisted the barrel back up again and secured the line at the bottom, and then went up and filled the barrel with the extra bricks. Then I went to the bottom and cast off the line. Unfortunately, the barrel of bricks was heavier than I was and before I knew what was happening, the barrel started down, jerking me off the ground. I decided to hang on, and half way up I met the barrel coming down and I received a severe blow on the shoulder. I then continued to the top, banging my head against the beam and getting my finger jammed in the pulley. When the barrel hit the ground, it burst its bottom, allowing all the bricks to spill out. I was not heavier than the barrel so I started down again at a high speed. Half way down I met the barrel coming up and I received several injuries to my shins. When I hit the ground I landed on the bricks, getting several cuts from sharp edges. At this point I must have lost my presence of mind because I let go of the line. The barrel then came down giving me another heavy blow on the head and putting me in the hospital. Now tell me about your week. Jim Beamer Brickley, Minnesota
