The Victoria GAZETTE |
September 2011 |
To the Editor: Hi, Sue. I had a chance to spend some time with the August issue of the Gazette and enjoyed it as I always do. I did note, however, in one article on the City Scoop pages that there was an incorrect statement about one of my votes. It pertained to the city logo issue. You were correct that the vote to continue to use the two logos was 4-1. However, I was not the one to vote against the motion. Mayor Thun was the dissenting vote. I am not certain whether this warrants a correction or not, pertaining to any policy you have on such matters. I do want the community to know that I support the continuing use of our historical logo as well as the updated "V" that we use in the downtown, as the majority of the Council agreed. Thank you, Sue. Councilmember Kim Roden Victoria, Minnesota
EDITOR'S NOTE: Thank you, Kim, for helping to keep the Gazette accurate. I contacted Mayor Thun who indeed reported: "I did vote against the use of two city logos. Branding is a unique art. I am in favor of sending clear and concise messages. The use of two logos, in my opinion, is confusing. I look forward to seeing what the staff brings back to the Council in a September City Council meeting. Most importantly, I look forward to a message that clearly tells residents and visitors what a great and unique community we are and to advertise the many city, organization, and business opportunities we offer in our city."
To the Editor: As I go fishing in Lake Orsen (the Gazette), I see the lucky Victoria folks reeling away and cooking their catch of the day and having a meal of sunnies, bread, potato salad, corn on the cob, and raspberry wine. I found your fishhook on page 29 in the wine bottle. I remember my mom's swan song at the Carver County Fair in 1990. She made homemade raspberry wine and earned her first Grand Champion Blue Ribbon, besides the blue ones on her other garden and flower entries. Every year Mom had a trunk full of entries and a profusion of blue ribbons. The judges all had a sample of her raspberry wine, and their eyebrows were moving up and down like Groucho Marx. Mom was so excited to see that purple ribbon. She had her hands over her cheeks when she saw the ribbon on the bottle. "I got the Grand Champion Ribbon after all these years!" A month later Mom was diagnosed with lung and bone cancer. She didn't smoke. She passed on February 17th, 1991, only 63 years old. Kay Meuwissen Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: I am the Vice President of Public Relations for the Carver County Communicators Toastmasters Club. The membership of our club draws from many different communities in Carver County Toastmasters is an organization that has been around for close to 90 years and has clubs all over the world. The goal of Toastmasters is to help people improve their public speaking and leadership skills, and it has helped me a great deal. I am wondering if there is a place in your newspaper where we could list the location and times of our meetings. We would also welcome you to attend one of our meetings as a guest so that you could personally experience what we are all about. Cindy Ahlm Carver County Toastmasters Carver County, Minnesota
To the Editor: This was the easiest issue [August] in all the years of getting the Victoria Gazette, in looking for the fishhook. Florian couldn't find the hook so I said I'd look for it, and I found it on page 29 in the Victoria House wine bottle, the one on the right. We enjoy the Gazette very much. Lots of news for a small magazine. Keep up the good work. First I look for the fishhook and then I read all the news. I have a sister and brother in law living in Victoria -- Frances and Raymond Schmieg. Marcella M. Eder St. Bonifacius, Minnesota
