City Scoop Continued:

Responding to a question, Mayor Jerry Bohn stated that city bonds pay for the project, and that benefiting properties can pay for their assessments over 15 years at an interest rate approximately twice that of the city's bond rate.
Allen Furst said, "We received good information at the meeting in December.  I'm looking forward to getting it done."
Joe Wessbecker said, "You can't do it fast enough.  I'm 100% for it.  Council-members have really gone out of their way for us."
Stated Councilmember Richard Tied-en in regard to all the street projects undertaken by the City of Victoria, "No one has been as positive as you people.  Thank you."
"I thank you also," said Mayor Bohn.  "It makes our job a lot easier."

PUT 100% OF THE GAS TAX IN ROADS
WHERE IT BELONGS IN THE FIRST PLACE
Councilmembers voted 3-1 to support the Minnesota Constitutional Dedication of the Motor Vehicle Sales Tax to Minne-sota's transportation infrastructure, "which forms the backbone of the state's economy and has a direct impact on future economic development."
Councilmember Terry Bishop voted against the motion.  Councilmember Mary Thun was absent.
Said Councilmember Bishop, "I think we should educate the public and let each individual cast their vote on it this fall.  I'm not comfortable passing a resolution on this … I don't know what the other side says.  To get one side of a presenta-tion doesn't give us enough information."
Stated Mayor Jerry Bohn, however, "I'm on the Transportation Coalition.  Right now about half of the gas tax goes to roads and half goes to the state's general fund.  If this amendment passes, all of it would go to roads.  That was the original intent of the law.  It would mean an extra $300 million for roads."
The mayor continued, "I would en-courage us to make this recommendation.  This is a phased-in program.  It would take five years to phase to 100%.  We also need an increase in gas tax."
Said Councilmember Kim Roden, "I agree that it's up to the voters, but it would be irresponsible for us
- with State Highways 5 and 7 going through Victoria - to not act on this.  We need to address roads and we need to pay for them."
Mayor Bohn made the motion.  The City of Victoria joins several other cities, counties, Chambers of Commerce, com-panies, associations, groups, boards, and contractors supporting this move to encourage people to vote for approval in the upcoming fall election.
