Victoria Moments Continued |
Great Year for Connor Schrempp. It has been a great year for Connor Schrempp, 7th grade competitive swimmer and member of the Waconia Swim Club and WMWD High School Swim Team. Connor is the son of Tom and Traci Schrempp of Victoria and the grandson of Dee Schrempp of Victoria. After some early experience with a previous club, Connor became a member of the Waconia Swim Club where his skills were refined and a new focus for better technique was added so he could move more efficiently through the water. Connor swam the summer long course season and the first half of the short course season with Waconia Swim Club and then spent three months on the WMWD boys high school swim team where he quickly moved from junior varsity to earning several points for the varsity team each meet. [WMWD stands for Watertown/Mayer/Waconia/Delano.] We realized that Connor had a competitive fire and that he loved to be pushed to his max, both in practice and in meets. We got him into the right events and saw his times drop each meet in the 200 and 500-freestyle. Connor was the only 7th grader on the team to participate in the high school section meet where he obtained a 2:10.61 in the 200 free, a 5:42.77 in the 500. His times earned him the opportunity to swim at the Minnesota Age Group State Meet. There Connor dropped seven more seconds in the 200 swim for a 2:03.54 which placed him 6th in the state for his age and had a 500 swim of 5:35.12 which was an 8th place finish and a total drop of 1:36 over the course of the year. Connor swarm a total of six individual events and three relay events at State. Connor is a great kid in the pool and out, which is a tribute to his parents, Traci and Tom. Their support, mixed with Connor’s dedication and hard work have given him what he needed to make this year possible. I’m enclosing a photo of Connor taken at the Minnesota Age Group State Swim Meet and also a photo of Connor with me, his coach. Connor’s other coaches are Coach Chuck Charnstrom and Coach Kate Wellems. Amy Schmitt, Head Coach, Waconia High School Waconia, Minnesota
Mike Gleason Benefit. I do not know if you are aware of this, but one of our Victoria residents needs our help. I will send a link to his cause. Maybe it can appear in the Gazette. We are selling raffle tickets at all of our Cuzzys locations. A few days before Christmas 2009, Mike Gleason and his wife Jennifer received the news that families pray they never have to hear. At 31 years of age, Mike had been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer, grade 4 astrocytoma, also known as glioblastoma. Even though surgery to remove the tumor from his spinal cord was a success, he has been left with weakness on the left side of his body and some numbness from the chest down. Glioblastoma has a very poor prognosis, the worst of any central nervous system. A benefit on behalf on Mike Gleason will beheld on Saturday, April 17th, at The Reserve, 3155 Empire Lane, Plymouth (northwest corner of Hwy 55 and 494) from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. Admission of $20 includes appetizers, beer, wine, and live entertainment. There will be a silent auction, a live auction, and raffle. Bobby Goral, Cuzzy’s Victoria House Victoria, Minnesota
Great Day at Island View. We just finished our 15th year of celebrating the Putting Challenge here at Island View Dining. We had a great day. It was Saturday, March 20th. Sold 600 tickets and raised $3,500 for the Waconia Food Shelf and the Westwonka Food Shelf. I am sending you a picture of all the bar owners/managers who help make this possible. There were nine businesses involved from St. Boni to Waconia. It’s a putting challenge where buses take them from business to business to putt on the golf hole that they designed. The individual with the lowest score wins. Above photo: Winner of the Putting Challenge 2010 was Scott ‘Boomer’ Biecejeski of Waconia with a score of 18. Also pictured (l-r): Olivia McCullum of Waconia, Kim Heenie and daughter Katie Heenie of Victoria. In second place was Jason Dennis of Waconia. Tied for third place were Gary Heinsch and Brad Reichenberger. Left photo, l-r: Paul Trinka (The Saloon), Paul Scheuble (Chumly’s), Susan Bloomquist (Tommy Sue’s), Trent Klein (Waconia Lanes), Kim Heenie (Island View Dining), Roy Schmidt (VFW), Terrill Anderson (Grumpy’s), Paul Mackenthun (Hopper’s), and in the very front is Jeff Thorson (Sherm’s St. Boni Inn).
