The Reason for the Season. An excellent replica of the Pieta by Michaelangelo is touring the nation and I was lucky to see it up close and personal during this Lenten Season of 2010 at the Cathedral of St. Paul. It brought back memories from our trip to Rome in 2006, when Allan and I saw the original Pieta at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. We could not get very close to the original, however, as we could at the Cathedral, because of the crowds of tourists and also because it is positioned behind heavy-duty glass, having been attacked and damaged in 1971 by an “unbalanced guest.” We were also told by Ulysses, our Italian tour guide at the time, that the Pieta is the only piece of art that Michaelangelo signed. His name is scripted across the sash that Mary is wearing from her left shoulder to the right side of her waist. The signature is repeated in this replica and visible in my photograph -- online at the Victoria Moments click if not in this print edition of the Gazette. I’ve read that the sculpting of this large life-size piece was able to work structurally because Mary was drawn out of proportion. She was made larger than her Son in order to hold the weight of it all. The nationwide tour of this amazing replica began here in Minnesota at the magnificent Cathedral of St. Paul because, according to the Catholic Spirit, newspaper of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis who quoted the owner of the replica, “because it’s the most beautiful cathedral in the country.” I suggest it’s the most beautiful cathedral in the country because it was modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. And to think it’s only 40 minutes from Victoria. This Pieta will be at the Cathedral through April 11th. The word “pieta” has come to be synonymous with this sculpture created by Michaelangelo over 500 years ago. The word has come to signify this very depiction of our Blessed Mother cradling the crucified and tortured body of her Son Jesus after being taken down from the cross. Such is the lasting beauty and truth of real art. The work was named by Michaelangelo because “pieta” is Italian for pity, lamentation, expression of grief. According to my American Heritage Dictionary, pity is the feeling which arrests the mind in the presence of whatsoever is grave in human sufferings and unites it with the human sufferer. ~Editor Sue

Mal and Lois MacAlpine (left) of Victoria celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary at Longboat Key, Florida. Harry and Shirley Winter (above) of Victoria, longtime friends, were in attendance. The key lesson to learn after 52 years: “Do not over estimate your ability to change others. Do no underestimate your ability to change yourself.” Thank you. ~Mal
