Spring Break Continued |
April 2010 |
Did you know that the big name in Tioga today is Hess? In 1966 Leon Hess made an initial purchase of Amerada stock and it became the Amerada Hess Corporation. Leon’s son John Hess acquired Amerada Corporation in 1969. Today Hess, alone, has over 100 company and contract employees in the Tioga area. The company operates and maintains nearly 150 producing wells ranging in depth from 8,100 to 14,000 feet. Hess Corporation just completed construction of a large modern technical campus at Tioga for its oil and gas operations in that area. The Tioga Gas Plant processes a large amount of natural gas and supplies much of North Dakota’s propane.
Did you know that in addition to a refinery at Mandan, ND, the oil is also refined at a plant in St. Paul, Minnesota? It is moved by pipeline, rail, and even trucks into nearby Canada. A refinery takes the crude oil and turns it into marketable products like propane, aviation fuels, diesel oil, fuel oil, lubricating oils and greases, bitumens, and asphalt. |
Did you know that the little town of Tioga, with a population of 1,500, is the home of the Tioga Municipal Airport? It has two runways; one is asphalt and one is grass. The airport was opened in 1947, covers 400 acres, and is publicly owned. Christopher Norgaard, who is a pilot in his own right, is a commissioner on the Tioga Airport Authority.
Did you know that the bigger town of nearby Minot with a population of 36,500 has an International Airport? Chris stands here at the fence with Addie and Gunnar, our grandchildren, at the Minot International Airport, watching as Uncle Nick, Auntie Jen, and Cousin Sophie take off for Minneapolis this past summer after a visit to Tioga. This is the same airport that Allan and I flew into on Friday, March 12th, 2010, for our Spring Break. The Minot airport has one gate, two runways (one asphalt and one concrete), and the terminal building is about the size of Victoria City Hall,
Did you know that the Lindbergh Terminal at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has 102 gates and the Humphrey Terminal has 22 gates?
