SNAP FITNESS OWNER JAY HANCOCK “IT’S A WILD RIDE AND I ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF IT” Jay Hancock, new owner of Snap Fitness in Victoria, attended the July 11th city council meeting. "I bought Snap Fitness in May of this year," he said. "I absolutely had no intention of buying Snap Fitness when I came here. I was just going to manage the club. I found out this Snap Fitness was in quite a bit of trouble so I decided to go ahead and put my money where my mouth was and bite the bullet and buy it." "I have five years of personal training experience, two years at LA Fitness," he continued. "I've got a wife and two beautiful kids. I'm from Madison, Wisconsin. I'm a NCAA National Champion in 2007 for the University of Wisconsin Whitewater football program. I moved to Minnesota in 2008. It's been a wild ride and I enjoy every minute of it. "I believe Snap Fitness has the opportunity to grow four or five times what it is now. This facility is something you should be happy is here. I'm a big fan of Zig Ziglar. One of his quotes is, 'One person with a commitment is more important than 100 people with an interest.' I have way more than an interest. I have a passion. "I wear three hats -- owner, manager, personal trainer. This is a privately owned franchise with a lot of convenience, open 24/7. The place has got a beautiful view. It needs a foundation. You don't build a house on dirt. You build it on cement." Asked Mayor Mary Thun, "Have you determined your membership goal?" "I'm surviving right now with 145 to 150 on average," said Mr. Hancock. "At one point that club had over 300 members. My goal is 500 members, which is 7% of the Victoria population." "What do you think led to its decline?" asked Councilmember Kim Roden. "The original owners sold it on a contract for deed and the middle owners didn't know much about fitness. I took it from 120 members on May 10th to 148 today." "Thank you for coming and we wish you much success," said Mayor Thun.
DEVELOPING AN ELECTRONIC POPLICY VICTORIA HEADS TOWARD PAPERLESS PACKETS Council unanimously approved a three-part motion on Monday, July 11th that paves the way for iPads and paperless council packets. 1) The City of Victoria will develop an electronic policy, 2) specifically geared toward city council packets, and 3) include the possibilities of different types of electronic solutions. When councilmembers receive more exact cost information on iPads and other electronic equipment, including cost savings, the purchase of such equipment will be considered for council and staff. Stated City Clerk Jennifer Kretsch, "The goal is to eliminate paper packets and use electronic packets." She pointed to saving related to cost of paper and printing and staff time. She said councilmembers could download electronic packets to their iPads and return to them at any time for information. Part of the project includes a bigger screen monitor in the Council Chambers, permanently mounted. Reports would be visible on the screen for video and audio presentations. Jennie cited a negative of laptops (versus iPads) for each councilmembers is the visual barrier to an audience, live or on cable TV. "Ipads are much cheaper," she added`. "We also have money in the budget to upgrade presentation equipment." An iPad costs less than $600. Eight of them would be around $4,500. "Does this include training for the council?" asked Mayor Mary Thun. "Solution Builders will offer training for the council," replied Jennie. "The iPads would be the property of the City of Victoria?" asked Councilmember Kim Roden. "Correct," stated Jennie. "They are insured under our insurance liability. Don [Administrator Uram] would also like an iPad for council meetings, and make a couple others available for people to use." "How long are these devices going to be operable?" asked Councilmember Roden. Replied Jennie, "We continue to research options as upgrades become available," adding that payback would be a couple of months. In addition to cost of the physical council packets, delivering them to each of the councilmembers on Thursday evenings, prior to Monday evening council meetings, takes driver time and gas.
