NOMINATING VICTORIA’S JERRY SCHMIEG FOR MN’S OUTSTANDING 2011 SENIOR VOLUNTEER On July 25th, Victoria city councilmembers approved a resolution nominating Jerry Schmieg, a lifelong resident of Victoria, to receive the State of Minnesota's 2011 Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award. Some of the volunteer services rendered by Jerry were identified in the resolution. They included his activity and membership on the Victoria Senior Commission, the Carver County Planning Commission, the Victoria Fire Department, the Victoria Parks and Recreation Committee, the Victoria Planning Commission, the Victoria City Council, the Victoria Lions Club, the St. Victoria Catholic Church in several capacities. Jerry served four-terms as the Mayor of Victoria. He volunteers with Love INC and Sharing and Caring Hands. Stated the resolution, "Jerry continues to contribute untold hours, resources, and wisdom to numerous other organizations and efforts in support of Victoria, Carver County, and the State of Minnesota. Now, therefore, be it resolved, the Victoria Senior Commission and Victoria City Council commend Jerry for all of his efforts during his 80 years of Victoria, Carver County, and State of Minnesota citizenship and strongly recommend Gerald B. Schmieg to be the recipient of Carver County and Minnesota's 2011 Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award."
A SIGN OF THE TIMES WELCOME TO VICTORIA +++ The first motion failed 2-3. The second motion failed for lack of a second. The third motion passed 3-2. The first motion, made by Mayor Mary Thun, was to place a permanent community sign in the southwest corner of Hwy 5 and Bavaria Road, on the high grade above Madelyn Creek. Also in favor: Councilmember Jim Crowley. The second motion, made by Councilmember Kim Roden, was to have staff review the issue and make a recommendation to council whether to put up a portable sign at the Bavaria Road intersection or modify the existing Welcome to Victoria monument. The third motion, made by Councilmember Tom O'Connor, was to investigate the feasibility and practicality of converting the existing Welcome to Victoria monument into a digital community sign. Also in favor: Councilmembers Tom Strigel and Kim Roden. Against: Mayor Thun and Councilmember Crowley. **** The discussion was in front of the council because of a request by the Victoria Business Owners Association to put up a sign at that Bavaria Road corner that would attract attention and keep traffic headed directly west to the central business district of Victoria, rather than turning at Bavaria Road and heading south or north, as many do. City Attorney Mike Norton has advised that such a "community sign" cannot advertise a particular business or business promotion such as "Sirloin steak on sale at Fresh Seasons" or "Happy Hour at Vic's Bar & Grill." Rather, the sign could legally be used for highlighting special events such as the KleinBank LED sign currently does in downtown Victoria
