         And then Gary thanked his family.  "I can't put it into words the support that a family gives," he said.  "My daughters helped with a lot of parades, not always by choice, and threw out hundreds of pounds of candy.  Thank you to my wife.  It's incredible the extensive events wives have to do alone because of a fire call.  I was never home during severe weather.  Our home got hit pretty bad in 1998 and my family was home alone."  They were alone, of course, because Gary was responding to calls to help others in town.

         Said Mayor Tom O'Connor to Gary and other firefighters in attandance, "We take for granted all too often the work you do.  We are indebted to you for all the work you do.  And to your family, we can only imagine the sacrifices you've made and worry you've had."

Gary's family attended the presentation and recognition in honor of his retirement after serving 30 years on the Victoria Fire Department.  L-r:  Wife Jean, Mother Nancy, Daughters Chrissy and Megan.  Many members of the Victoria Fire Department also attended the presentation

in support of their colleague and fellow firefighter.
