PRESENTING THE CENTENNIAL FLAG SEE IT FLYING AT VICTORIA CITY HALL The logo was designed by Larisa Zeiszler of Solutions By D-Zyn, who answered questions for the Gazette. The flag was ordered through The Bernard Group, a Chanhassen company. The flag is 6 feet by 4 feet and made of two-ply polyester. It will fly until the Centennial Time Capsule Ceremony, which may occur in December. Then it will be placed inside the Centennial Safe, to be opened in one hundred years.
PRESENTING THE CENTENNIAL SAFE TO BE FILLED IN 2015, OPENED IN 2115 The city retrieved the safe from the Kirsch Building before it was demolished in September 2010. The Kirsch Building was located in downtown Victoria adjacent to the south side of Old City Offices and Village Hall buildings, which were demolished in July 2015.
NEW COUNCILMEMBER TOM VOGT EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN VICTORIA Council voted 4-0 on July 27th to appoint Tom Vogt to the Victoria City Council. The fifth seat had been empty since Joe Pavelko resigned on June 22nd. There are less than 18 months left of the term. City Manager Laurie Hokkanen stated that Mr. Pavelko is no longer a Victoria resident.
MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR LEXI KRETSCH YOUNG DAUGHTER OF VICTORIA CITY CLERK The July 13th City Council meeting was cancelled because of the death on July 10th of Lexi Kretsch, age 16, daughter of Victoria City Clerk Jennifer Kretsch, due to an automobile accident. Jennifer has worked 14 years for the city. At the July 27th council meeting, Mayor Tom O'Connor called for a moment of silence in memory of Lexi. "Her passing touched us deeply," he said.
SUPPORT FOR 19 TOWNHOME UNITS ON STOWE PROPERTY AT PARK DRIVE Council expressed general support of the development plan for the Stowe property at the northwest corner of Hwy 5 and Park Drive. For many years it was called the Hedtke property. The late Virginia Stowe was the daughter of Herb and Evelyn Hedtke.
BAYFRONT PARK TO EMERGE IN 2015 IN DOWNTOWN VICTORIA BY ICE CREAM SHOP Ann Mahnke, Director of Parks and Public Works, presented an updated Master Plan for Bayfront Park on July 27th. She said it's location has come to be stated as "next to the ice cream shop."
PLEASE SUPPORT VICTORIA’S MARKET AND ALL BUSINESSES IN THE COMMUNITY Council passed a resolution on July 27th stating, "The City of Victoria supports and encourages the patronage of the Victoria's Market grocery store."
PUBLIC RUNOFF ONTO PRIVATE PROPERTY CITY OF VICTORIA WILL FIX THE PROBLEM Council voted 4-0 on July 27th to spend $42,665 to correct drainage problems on County Road #43 which have adversely affected three properties on Lake Wasserman, two owned by the Patz and Hayes families.
SHORTER SCOOP FROM JULY VICTORIA LIONS DONATE $7,904 TO THE CITY *Council accepted a donation of $7,904 from the Victoria Lions and their charitable gambling operations in Victoria. Manager Laurie Hokkanen pointed out that the Lions are require to contribute 10% of their charitable gambling operations and the city typically uses the donation to do improvements at Lions Park. The Lions sell pulltabs at Floyd's and Vic's.
