GAZETTE

As noted at the beginning of this story, when the Drew family first arrived at Victoria in 1935, they lived in one of the apartments above the Notermann store before finding that large room in the Old Dance Hall in 1938.  Seems half the population of Victoria in the early days began their married life above that store.  The Notermann Building has, in recent times, been renovated and refurbished to become one of the very attractive buildings in downtown Victoria today.  The same cannot be said for the Old Dance Hall.

In 1943, the same year that the Drews moved out of that Dance Hall, Karl and Ida Thiede purchased the brick butcher shop  on Main Street Victoria, just a couple doors down, and moved the Dance Hall to the back of it, next to "the alley," then turned the Hall into their locker and made 20 to 30 different kinds of sausages there before retiring in 1968.

In June of 1993, the butcher shop and Old Dance Hall combo was one of six sites in downtown Victoria identified by the Chamber of Commerce as needing to be cleaned up or cleared out.  In June of 1994 the shop and the Hall were demolished and removed, having been purchased by the City of Victoria with downtown development in mind.  The Hall had survived nearly 100 years!

And so there was a room at the inn for Kelly Drew and his family when they stopped to live for a time in Victoria, Minnesota.  The Old Dance Hall has since vanished but memories from within its walls have risen to the surface like Ghosts of Christmas Past.  There is a time for everything under the sun.  Thank you, Donald, Harvey, Robert, and Shirley, for calling and stopping by.  Good to meet all of you.

The Old Dance Hall was demolished in June of 1994.  Since 1943 it had been located behind the Thiede Meat Market which the caterpillar chewed up after it swallowed the Dance Hall.
