DOC SCHMIEG RETIRES HOPES TO RETURN PART TIME Doc Schmieg, front desk manager at the Victoria Recreation Center, has retired after 11 years of working for the City of Victoria. Stated Ann Mahnke, Parks and Rec Director, at the November 14th city council meeting," It is with great pleasure and also a bit of sadness that we have a longtime employee retiring. Actually, tomorrow is her last day. I have had the pleasure of working with Doc for nearly four years. As I always tell everyone, she's the one that keeps the place afloat." Stated Mayor Mary Thun, who presented Doc with an inscripted clock on behalf of the city, "Congratulations on your well deserved retirement. Also, thank you for your husband who's done a lot for Victoria." Said Doc, after the accolades and gift, "Thank you so much. It's been a joy. I'm going to miss people, but I'll still be working out there, just not at 5:30 in the morning. It'll be at a reasonable hour with my husband Chub. I've enjoyed it, and I've had some very nice jobs in my years of working so I'm going to look forward to back up and just enjoying life for the next three to four months and, hopefully, if Ann wants me back, I'll be back part time to help if needed. Hopefully I can do that. Thank you for your time and this award."
KREY LAKES READY TO MOVE FORWARD VICTORIA APPROVESE REDUCED SETBACKS On November 14th Council reviewed a revised sketch plat for future phases of the Krey Lakes development, known as Lakebridge, on the west edge of Victoria, for the purpose of dialogue and communication with the developer and not to make decisions regarding approval. Feedback from councilmembers was solicited before going to the preliminary plat stage. The two major landowners of this property are Pemtom Land Company (Dan Herbst) and D.R. Horton. Krey Lakes was platted in 2006 by Hartman Communities and Pemtom and later sold to D.R. Hutton. Holly Kreft, Victoria Community Development Director, pointed out the development is bordered on the north by Highway 5, on the south by Krey Lake, with undeveloped property to the west. Total acreage of his phase, she informed, is about 105 gross acres, including wetlands and Carl Krey Lake. Holly said the property originally was platted for 75 lots; now there will be 93 lots -- 48 in the north part and 45 in the south part. A main street traversing the property from east to west is called Lakes Parkway. Lots sizes north of Lakes Parkway are smaller than those south of Lakes Parkway. Lot widths north of Lakes Parkways would be 65 feet; lot widths south of Lakes Parkway would be 85 feet. She said the developer would like reduced front yard setbacks and reduced side yard setbacks. Ron Mullenbach, Land Manager for D.R. Horton, answered questions from councilmembers. Of the new home product he said, "It's not an entry level home. They average 2,700 to 3,000 square feet. Narrower lots are becoming more desirable. Some professionals don't have time for larger yards. Price range will be from the mid $300,000's with some in the $400,000 range. A lot of buyers are empty nesters or they have older children, also a lot of relocation type families."
