Virginia Harris Continued |
Dedicated to the sunshine of truth, the moonshine of meeting deadlines, and the starshine of Victoria. |

While working for Carver County, Virginia had left her home in the Smithtown neighborhood of Victoria. It was 1987. The house was big and the kids were grown up and almost gone. She moved to Minnetonka for a few months because Casey, the youngest of her eight children, was a student at Minnetonka High School. Then she lived about ten years in Chanhassen. After 17 years of working for Carver County, Virginia quit the job and retired. It was 1994 and she had turned age 62. She had family and friends who died young and expected she’d also die young. After she retired from Carver County, the Minnesota chapter of the American Planning Association wanted to start a website. “I told them that I’d do it and I did,” said the always gutsy and capable lady. “I designed and managed their website. We were the second chapter in the National APA to have a website. I had learned the html language and I enjoyed that challenge.” Why did she choose to live in St. Paul? “There’s a nice skyway system and I couldn’t afford Minneapolis,” she stated. “I take senior citizen courses at St. Thomas. I enjoy some of the cultural things. I love the Opera. I can walk to the Opera. I have season tickets.” Also after retirement, Virginia created websites for small nonprofits. Her degree in mathematics and propensity for that realm has served her well. Virginia’s personal life today includes several friends in St. Paul and her children and grandchildren and their families. Her children are Larry, Kathy, Michael, Teresa, Rich, Tom, Pattie, and Casey. Virginia has 14 grandchildren. “I didn’t expect to live this long,” said the 82-year old lady. “Old age doesn’t run in my family. Even my younger sister has been dead for twelve years.” But Virginia wouldn’t have it otherwise. After all, there’s the Opera and the skyway system. The independent lady navigates well. Thank you, Virginia, for helping to get Victoria organized back in the ‘70’s. The changes have been phenomenal since you left. Hope you can come and see the new Victoria City Hall. Thank you for the story. |
