It’s not a fish; it’s an oyster. And if I remember Biology 101 accurately, an oyster is a crustacean. It has a crust or a shell, like a lobster or shrimp, but it lives under water and seems more closely related to a fish than, say, a human being or a puppy. Allan and I eat oysters on the half shell and also as the Rockefeller variety. At Christmas time I make oyster stew but it’s really soup, a soup with only two ingredients -- oysters and milk. Oh, yes, and a little butter, salt, and pepper. First you cook the raw oysters in some butter until the edges curl. That’s the hook -- the curl. Only takes a minute. Then you pour the mixture into a kettle of hot milk and season to taste. Don’t forget the hook part when you’re making oyster stew, and don’t forget the hook part when you’re reading the Gazette. Last month I curled the fishhook around the top part of the shepherd’s staff of the Leuthner Well ad on page 15. Many of you found it but only one can win the $10 drawing. This time it was Jolene Spencer of Victoria who got pulled out of the minnow bucket just in time. I believe Jolene is Tim’s wife. I hid the fishhook in this issue of the Gazette also. If you find it, email Sue@VictoriaGazette.com or drop a line to me at P.O. Box 387, Victoria, MN 55386 and sinker in the mail. If you run into trouble, just remember the curl. That’s the hook! |
