New Year's Day. The first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar used in ancient Rome. It marks the end of New Year's Eve celebrations. This year January 1st is on a Tuesday.

Victoria City Council. January 14th and January 28th. Held each month on the second and fourth Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at Victoria City Hall on Rose Street in downtown Victoria, unless otherwise notified.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Monday, January 21st, 2013. It's a U.S. federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and is celebrated on the third Monday of January each year. It was first observed on January 20th, 1986.

Roe v. Wade Anniversary. Wednesday, January 23rd, marks the 40th anniversary of Roe V. Wade, a Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States of America. This decision gave women the right to kill their babies and defied several states laws that prohibited abortion.

Christian Unity Week. Every year from January 18th through January 25th for congregations and parishes all over the world. Special ecumenical worship services are often arranged.

Groundhog Day. Saturday, February 2nd. If it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

Victoria Fishing Contest. Sunday, February 3rd, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Stieger Lake near downtown Victoria. Sponsored by the Victoria Fire Department. Hot food, hot chocolate, prizes and drawings galore. A perfect time to help support the Victoria Fire Department.
