New Year's Day. Thursday, January 1st. Happy New Year. It is the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian Calendar as well as the Julian Calendar used in the Roman Empire since 45 B.C. The Gregorian Calendar of 1582 was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII to include leap days. The Julian Calendar had been introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. A Julian year averaged 365.25 days.

WeCAB Seminar. Thursday, January 8th, in Elstan Hall at the St. Victoria Catholic Church. Learn about WeCAB and volunteer to be a driver to assist others in getting to medical appointments and stores.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Monday, January 19th. An American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. to celebrate the life and achievements of the influential civil rights hero. He was born on January 15th, 1929, and assassinated on April 4th, 1968.

Bloodmobile. Victoria's Community Blood Drive will be held on Wednesday, January 21st, from 1 p.m. till 7 p.m. at the Victoria Recreation Center. This American Red Cross Bloodmobile is sponsored by the Victoria Lions Club.

Victoria City Council Meetings. Monday, January 12th, and Monday, January 26th, at City Hall on Rose Street. 6:30 p.m.

Groundhog Day. Monday, February 2nd. If it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

Victoria Ice Fishing Contest. Sunday, February 1st, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Stieger Lake in downtown Victoria. Sponsored by the Victoria Fire Department.
