by Sue Orsen The Victoria Gazette In recalling the year that we've just lived through here in Victoria, I found that many things congregated into five distinct categories: 1) New Businesses, 2) New Neighborhoods, 3) Individual Awards, 4) New Chapters in People's Lives, and 5) Deaths that touched many of us. The year 2017 saw the most robust startup ever of new (or expanded) businesses in downtown Victoria. Many are located in three buildings. The Enki Building is now home to Enki Brewing, American Classic Ballroom, Victoria Rose Floral, and Snap Fitness. The Notermann Building is now home to Ruby's Roost Bakery & Coffee and Winnie Lu. The Mainstreet Building is home to The Parlour Salon & Spa, Willa June Apparel & Home, Seek Eye Care, White Birch House, and Noble Lion. This is in addition to all the other downtown buildings and businesses that help to make Victoria a dining, shopping, and browsing destination. Many of them are listed in The Victoria Directory on the back page of each and every issue of the Gazette. The year 2017 saw the strongest market for new homes in Victoria since the 2008 Recession. New neighborhoods are under construction everywhere. On the north side there is Hawks Pointe on Lake Minnetonka and Waterford Landing on Schutz Lake. On the south side are several new neighborhoods adjacent to Lake Wassermann. On the west side are new families making Carl Krey Lake their new home. On the east side of Victoria are new villas and multi-family townhomes. In the city's central business district, Victoria Flats is making available 80 brand new apartment homes. The Gazette's overview of Victoria 2017 does not include details and descriptions of the new projects. It's doesn't expound on the individual awards or the new chapters in the lives of residents or the city. It doesn't inform about the people who died in 2017 or how their lives touched families and friends. The twelve heavy Gazettes of last year contain all of those details and much more. Now we begin anew, with the Victoria Gazette continuing to provide the most comprehensive compilation of Victoria news anywhere in the county and even in the world.
