What were his first impressions of Victoria? “Our children love the Dairy Queen,” said Daddy Dixon. “Lynn and I came out earlier this year, in March, and had a meeting with the Lake Auburn Board. There was lots of snow and there were wild turkeys. It was a very good meeting. I’d say it was more than an interview; it was an exercise in spiritual discernment. There’s access to more opportunities here. Bird watching has become something we do. The Jones’ were avid bird feeders and so we have that benefit.” “The kids will be 4th and 7th graders in the Waconia School District this fall,” continued the father of Jacob, now 11, and Danielle, now 9. “These are much bigger schools here than at Fargo.” What were his first impressions of the Lake Auburn Moravian Church? “It’s just lovely,” he replied. “It’s so well kept. There’s a sense of pride and care here. It’s not purely aesthetic. This is God’s House. There is a special care that people of this congregation have for God’s House. And I love having the lake across the road. I plan on getting my canoe licensed.” Victoria’s new pastor adds, “It’s a great deal of humility to be a minister. I was always convinced that God was taking care of me, but I’ve never been under the delusion that I was the center of the universe. It is in Jesus that the love of God was made tangible.” What does the Dixon family do for fun besides the Dairy Queen and nature events? Have they been to the Mall of America? “Oh, yes,” said Brian. “We were there before moving to Victoria. And now we’ve been there to see Shrek Forever After and The Karate Kid. We like good movies.” If you check Brian’s blog (www.patienceofaseed.blogspot.com) you’ll discover that some of his favorite movies include Lord of the Rings, Gran Torino, Whale Rider, The Princess Bride, and Secondhand Lions. Who have been some influential people in his life? “My wife Lynn,” he said, “and Barry Farr. Also the Reverend Doctor Stephen Nicholas and his wife Kathy. Steve was the pastor at St. Paul’s Moravian Church in Maryland. And my high school English teacher, Mrs. Thayer. Also Grandpa Ed and Grandma Barbara, my stepfather’s parents.” At this point, Brian reached over to his already well stocked bookshelves in his Lake Auburn office and pulled out a children’s Bible that he received from Grandpa Ed and Grandma Barbara in 1980. “I know they’re not blood related to me,” he said, “but they always said they were praying for me. I believe they are part of that ‘cloud of witnesses’ spoken of in scripture.” The verse is Hebrews 12:1-3. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that tangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Why does Pastor Brian love preaching to the choir? “It’s a sense of call that I feel,” he replied. “It’s a call to re-awaken the church. There is a sense of urgency for me, to remind people of something they already know. It’s part of loving God’s people.” He acknowledged that sometimes love is hard and demanding, but the name of his website and blog reveal that the Reverend Brian R. Dixon is well equipped because he has the “patience of a seed.” Welcome, Brian, Lynn, Jacob, and Danielle, to the Victoria community. Glad you’re here, preaching to the choir. |
