To the Editor: After being gone from Victoria for three weeks, we returned home late Wednesday evening, May 30th. In reading the Gazette, we were deeply saddened to read of the death of Elizabeth Diethelm. She was a great person, very friendly, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. They were our neighbors to the south during the 1930's. They had a large family and now many of them are gone. I would like to send Elizabeth's brother Paul a sympathy card. Please email me his address. Ron Holtmeier Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Thank you for publishing the article about our granddaughter Jamie Thierolf. Harriet and I took the train out to Pennsylvania for the graduation. The train ride was our first for that distance (1,500 miles), and it was a neat experience. When on a train, you share a table with other passengers when eating. Our first table partners were an Amish young man about 25 and a Missouri Synod Pastor who had accepted a congregation near Alexandria, MN. The Amish guy said he owns 200 acres of land in upstate New York and is a carpenter by trade. I asked him about horses that are used for their horse and buggies (and there were lots near Lititz, PA, where our daughter Pam lives). He said they buy the cheapest horses they can. Interesting, since the Amish horses that I saw in PA looked to have very nice horse flesh. Otto and Sue Dreydoppel send their greetings to you and all who may remember them from when they served here at Lake Auburn in Victoria. They attended Jamie's graduation ceremonies and so we had a nice chat with them. Otto is now a chaplain at Moravian Hall Square, a Moravian facility in Nazareth, PA, just a few blocks from his home, and Sue is the director of Moravian Camp Hope in New Jersey. To the Editor: I am saddened to report that Hank Fossum, Jr., 87, died on Memorial Day, May 28th. He will be cremated and his remains will be buried with his folks here at the Moravian Church of Lake Auburn Cemetery. Hank grew up in Victoria and graduated from Waconia High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and lived for a while in Jonathan before ending up in Arkansas. His father was Henry Fossum, Sr. His stepmother was Pearl Plocher Fossum. I believe that Hank's mother died shortly after he was born, and he and his sister Myrene were raised by Pearl and Henry. Henry, Sr., had a garage in the location which is now the parking lot just east of Vic's Bar and Grill. He sole PURE gasoline and sold Plymouth cars as well. Lenny Koehnen started working for Henry before going into the garage business for himself and ran it for many years here in Victoria. Henry also ran the school bus for many years for District 16. When I first started school, the bus had benches around the sides of the interior where the kids sat. I believe this bus was condemned and Henry bought a nice new orange bus in 1938 which had regular seats. Henry served on the District 16 School Board and on the Victoria Fire Department. He and my dad were very close friends. Ron Holtmeier Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hi, Sue. On behalf of the members of the Area Partnership for Pierson Lake Enhancement (APPLE), I would like to thank you for printing the articles in your paper regarding water quality and Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). We're fortunate to have people like Bill Olson and Telly Mamayek submitting these informative articles. People are wondering how to stop the spread of AIS. Educating ourselves is a good start. Kurt Zuppke, APPLE President Chaska, Minnesota
