SHORTER SCOOP FROM MAY

MARKETING SPECIALIST FOR VICTORIA

*Council approved the independent contractor agreement with Jody Majeres, owner of Majeres Graphic Design in Victoria, for the Marketing Specialist position for the City of Victoria.  The agreement allows for up to 10 hours per week at $20 per hour.  The Marketing Specialist will provide assistance to all city departments.  Some of the work may include the design of logos and marketing brochure for the Victoria Recreation Center and marketing materials for available land development and Hwy 5 closure.

*Council approved the hiring of three summer seasonal positions for the City of Victoria:  Jay Von Bank and David Abraham in Public Works and Sara Renney in Daycare.

*Council approved the replacement of skate park equipment at a cost of $25,000 including installation from the American Ramp Company out of Joplin, Missouri.   Existing low grade equipment is eight years old, the wood is rotting, and it's no longer safe for skaters.

*Council approved the 2011 street maintenance projects that include the sealcoating of streets in the Woodlands, Greenway on the Park, and Allegheny neighborhoods and also the parking lot at the Victoria Recreation Center.  As in the past two years, Victoria will be partnering with the cities of Chanhassen, Mayer, Cologne, and Waconia for the street projects.  Total cost to Victoria:  $67,642.

*Council accepted the following donations;  $100 from Floyd's for Concerts in the Park, $300 shade tree and $500 park bench from Scott Hochsttedler, $186 memorial plaque for Rhapsody Park from Jason and Paige Endres, $250 in pizza from Party Pizza for Concerts in the Park.

*Council approved the 2011 Strategic Plan with the following high priority projects:  Financial plan for a new public works facility and for street maintenance, change to a city manager form of government, completion of land annexation around Lake Wasserman along with selling the city-owned property that had been targeted for a new public works site, partnership with Victoria businesses in preparation for the closing of Hwy 5 in the summer of 2012, connecting the city's trail system to Chaska and the Arboretum.

*Council voted unanimously to opt out of sending a Victoria representative to regular meetings of the Association of Carver County Elected Leaders.  As Councilmember Tom O'Connor said of meetings he attended, "I was underwhelmed."

*Stated Kim Roden on May 9th, "We have a new Sheriff and new County Attorney and I'd like to see them here before they come and ask for money, for a five-minute how ya doing."  Replied Don Uram, "The Sheriff and his Chief Deputy will be at our next meeting, along with Gary Van Eyll, the area's new representative on the Metropolitan Council.  I'll work on getting the County Attorney here some time."

*Council approved a raffle permit for a fundraiser at the Deer Run Golf Club for the Academy of Holy Angels, Richfield.

*Council authorized the application for a MN DNR Rural Fire Department Matching Grant for the purchase of two portable water tanks that are used in areas where water hydrants are not available.  Total cost:  $3,970.  If awarded, the grant will cover half that cost and the Victoria Fire Department would provide the other half.

*Council approved the hiring of Brian Panning as a summer seasonal worker for the Public Works Department.

*The City of Victoria applied for and was awarded $4,000 in grant money for the replacement of fluoride equipment for community drinking water.  Total cost of the pump is $5,947 so the city will be picking up the remaining $1,947.  Stated Mayor Thun, "Four thousand dollars on a $5,900 project is a lot of money for Victoria.  A lot of thanks to the Public Works Department."

*Council accepted donations from the Victoria Lions Club ($500) for Concerts in the Park and from Kennedy & Graven ($200) for Concerts in the Park.  Mike Norton is the city's attorney with Kennedy & Graven.

*Council approved the vacation of drainage and utility easements at Cliffwood Circle.  Two lots on Lake Minnetonka are being combined into one lot, with a new home to be constructed in the center, over what was an easement, now vacated.

*Council mentioned a residential property on Hwy 5 near the Research Farm that is not in accordance with city code and has been contacted.  Said Councilmember Roden, "I don't want to be heavy handed, but I also don't want to be ignored."
