GAZETTE

June 2012

To the Editor:

Due to recent rainfall, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has opened the Gray’s Bay Dam for the first time this season.  Since Wednesday, May 23rd, the water level on Lake Minnetonka has risen by more than five inches to 928.74 feet.  According to the operating plan, the dam can be opened once the lake level rises above 928.6 feet.         Water is discharging from Lake Minnetonka at a rate of 12 cubic feet per second, which is the prescribed discharge for current conditions under the operating plan.

It is not unusual for the Gray’s Bay Dam to remain closed until late May.  That has happened at least three times since 2000 (most recently in 2009) due to lack of precipitation.  Lake Minneteonka is a dynamic system strongly affected by weather patterns.

When conditions are dry, the lake not only receives less rainwater, it also recharges groundwater.  During rainy periods, the lake receives more water from the sky as well as heavier flows from the many streams that drain into it.

The Gray’s Bay Dam is a control structure that regulates flow from the lake into Minnehaha Creek.  The MCWD operates the dam according to a strict plan dictated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

To the Editor:

If you are an active military, military reserve, retired military, national guard, coast guard, or an honorably discharged veteran, you qualify for an exclusive $1,000 incentive.  This is in addition to the existing factory rebates, meaning you could  get discounts up to $8,700 towards a new 2012 Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or Ram vehicle.

Waconia Chrysler Dodge Jeep wants to thank military members who have helped to preserve our freedom.  With appreciation for their service and dedication to our country, we have put together this very special military incentive program, which ends May 31st, 2012.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  The following sequence of email letters received at the Gazette office gives a few details of just how it happened in this Digital Age that communication led to conservation and top honor for Victoria.

April 19th, 2012

Quick, catch the wave and help the City of Victoria win the National Mayors' Challenge for Water Conservation.  As I write this at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 19th, Victoria is Number One among those in the category for mid-sized towns throughout the Midwestern United States!

The winning city is being determined by each town's percentage of citizens that take the online pledge to conserve water at mywaterpledge.com.  Any age citizen can take the pledge in the nationwide salute to the 40th anniversary of Clean Water Act.

The contest runs from March 30th to April 30th and is being presented by the Wyland Foundation.  Founder Robert Wyland is the artist world famous for painting marine scenes featuring whales on buildings around the globe.

Not only will the contest bring recognition and prestige to our community, the City of Lakes and Parks, but participants of each regional winner will share in a chance at the over 1,000 water conservation related prizes such as the Toyota Prius C Hybrid, 12 custom sprinkling systems, 12 water saving toilets, 50 low-flow showerheads, 1,000 gift cards to a home improvement store, and more.

Get on board and salute Victoria by pledging before midnight on April 30th.
