To the Editor: Hi, Sue. Bill and I have been on a treadmill to get both our cabin and house ready to sell. Yes, we are giving up on Minnesota weather and moving to Florida. We have been praying for over a year now about when we should retire. We are weary and need to take a rest. I will probably work again in ministry and counseling after I take that rest. We love Minnesota and all our dear friends. So we will most likely come back and rent for July and August. However, getting two places looking well for sale is almost more than we can bear. We will not moves till January or February next year, so we have some time to say our goodbyes. We are having a wonderful villa built and I am looking forward to choosing all my interiors. I will certainly need you to send me the Gazette so I can keep up on all the Victoria news. Blessings and love. Maureen Bonner, Waterbrooke Fellowship Church Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has released its 2013 Lake Grades, documenting the condition of 67 lakes and bays across the District. Grades are based on water clarity, algae growth, and nutrients. A total of 19 lakes/bays received an A grade, generally healthy and characterized by beautiful clear water. There were 15 lakes/bays with a B grade, also good for swimming and recreation but late summer algae blooms may cut the season short. A total of 17 lakes/bays received a C grade which signifies an average quality lake that may not be ideal for swimming, boating, and fishing due to summer algae growth. A total of 15 lakes/bays received a D grade and one an F. These lakes have limited water transparency, severe algae problems, and very limited recreational use. Lakes in or very near Victoria and their 2013 grades include Carl Krey (B), Church (B-), East Auburn (C), Kelzer's Pond (B-), Mud (D-), Parley (D+), Pierson (B), Schutz (C), Stieger (B), Stone (A-), Sunny (N/A), Tamarack (B-), Virginia (C-), Wasserman North (C+), Wasserman South (B+), Wasserman West (N/A), West Auburn (B-), Zumbra (A-). To the Editor: It's June. In a minute it will be the 4th of July and then Labor Day. We can't let the summer slip away. Our fairways are from Heaven. They're perfect. So are the greens. Barry Provo and his staff do an amazing job. Did I say our fairways are a "slice" of Heaven? No. We're avoiding that word. But we have a new grill, not your basic grill. I mean a mega-grill built into the bricks of our old farm house. It's shockingly cool. And we also serve food and drinks on shockingly cool beverage carts. New beverage carts. No one in Minnesota has these guys! And not just are the bev carts fantastic, but the bev cart operators are even more fantastic. It's their job and they do it well. Not a bad way to start the summer. Cheers! Tom Abts, Deer Run, GM and Head Golf Professional Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Many are called and few are chosen. That's why we elected our city council. We entrusted them to make the right decisions for the people of Victoria. At least four years of research went into the planning of our new City Hall/Library and Public Works facility to make sure of the best place and time to build. Al and I moved back to Victoria because we feel strongly about what Victoria stands for. Victoria is a town with a vision, blessed by lake and parks. I'm sure there were a few hiccups along the way but, all said and done, Victoria is known for its good hearted people doing their very best. Our new City Hall/Library will be a welcoming place to bring children and grandchildren. It's even located right along the bike trail. What a perfect opportunity. Let's keep our positive vision in Victoria and together we can make this happen. Louise Lehner, Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Residential construction permitting activity in the Twin Cities continued to show signs of slowing for the month of May, primarily in multi-family construction. Permits for the month were down about 7% over that of May 2013, while units were down by 33%. The incredibly bad winter weather slowed construction, financing is still tight for consumers (particularly first time buyers), and the impact and uncertainty surround the Governor's mounting regulatory proposals (such as the billion dollar home indoor sprinkler mandate) are proving significant challenges for consumers and builders.
