THE GROUNDBREAKINGS

VICORIA PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY

         Groundbreaking ceremony for the new Victoria Public Works Facility occurred as planned at 6 p.m. on Monday evening, June 2nd, 2014, at the treed location on Bavaria Road next to the Hartman Garden Center.  The sun was shining.  Featured in the very first photo of the evening were the four councilmembers who worked toward this moment.  Said Mayor Tom O'Connor, "All four of us have supported and been in favor of this project from the beginning."  He acknowledged the work and dedication that brought the City of Victoria to this point.  He said the new larger building is needed badly by the Victoria Public Works Department, and it is designed to double in size as the city grows.   To Public Works Director Ann Mahnke, he said, "I bet you can hardly believe this day has arrived."

         In addition to Mayor O'Connor, councilmembers in support of this positive project for the City of Victoria included Tom Strigel, Jim Crowley, and Lani Basa -- all of whom together broke ground with the first shovels of spring soil.  Several other people greeted the groundbreaking event with joy, including past Mayor Mary Thun who spent much of her final term as mayor in a quest for new public facilities.

         At the last city council meeting at which Mayor Thun presided, on December

10th, 2012, she said, "I want to emphasize to the public how important these buildings are to this city.  Staff today is in a position and a place that none of us would be willing to work in.  The Public Works building is an embarrassment.  I encourage the new council and public to support these projects in the future.  That's my final plea on this."

         City staff, design and construction contractors, and others attended the groundbreaking.  A reel of photos is located in Sue's Album at VictoriaGazette.com;

         The new Victoria Public Works Facility is scheduled to be completed in 2014.

VICTORIA CITY HALL

         Groundbreaking ceremony for the new Victoria City Hall and Library occurred as planned at 7 p.m. on Monday evening, June 2nd, 2014, at the Stieger Lake location on Stieger Lake Lane in downtown Victoria, adjacent to the Lakeside Building currently under construction.  Although rain threatened to put a damper on things, many officials from the city, the county, the county library, and the community stayed dry and took turns with the groundbreaking shovels.  Many more photos are online in Sue's Album.

         Mayor Tom O'Connor specially addressed the county commissioners who came for the celebration, including Randy Maluchnik, Tom Workman, Gayle Degler, and Jim Ische.  Said Mayor O'Connor, "We wouldn't be having this Library without the County.  From the first moment we brought up the possibility of a Library for Victoria, the County has been supportive.  Thank you."

         Five City of Victoria mayors (four past, one present) were on hand for the momentous occasion.  This will be the first Victoria City Hall that is being constructed to serve its own purpose.  Victoria's first City Hall was in the old public school building.  Victoria's second City Hall is its current location in the old fire department building.
