The Village Hall Continued |
Dedicated to the sunshine of truth, the moonshine of meeting deadlines, and the starshine of Victoria. |
8661 Deer Run Dr. * Victoria 952-443-2351 |
The Village Hall was constructed of cement blocks with a brick veneer front. Size of the building was 38 x 74 feet. Jerry kept an Open House ad from the Waconia Patriot that lists the firms involved in construction of the Village Hall. Jerry provided first names of the company owners. They included (Don) Kerber Excavating, Victoria; (Wilbur) Tellers Electric, Chaska; (Dick) Schmidt & (LeRoy) Miller Cement Block Work, Victoria; (Jerry) Schmieg Decorating, Victoria; (John) Lano Crane Work, Chaska; (Will) Yetzer's Floor Covering, Waconia; Abel Heating and AC, Excelsior; (Maurice) Leuthner Well, Victoria; Twerp Tile (Iver Florland), Bloomington; (Mike) Storms Metal, Victoria; (Henry) Schneewind Plastering & Brick, NYA; and Victoria Lumber Company. According to minutes in the Minnesota Library Archives, Diethelm Construction was paid $26,756 to construct the building and pay all the subs. Bank loan principal of $6,500 brought the total to $33,256.33. It's all written down and recorded in the Village Treasurer's Annual Statement for the year ending December 31st, 1966. It was signed by Village Treasurer Kenneth Wellens on May 5th, 1967. (Thank you, Whitey. I suspect you are resting in peace knowing I found your impeccable notes in perfect penmanship, clear ledger entries, and treasure trove of information.) Whitey also had an entry for $418 to Davis Restaurant Equipment for dishes to be used at the Hall. Other members of the Victoria Commercial Club identified as appearing to the Village Council in regard to a new Hall included Sylvester Vogel, John Notermann, Jerry Schmieg, Ken Diethelm, and Ken Wellens. On October 10th, 1966, Larry Hanson and Ken Wellens asked the Village Council if they could rent the new Village Hall for their dinner meetings. The answer was yes. The Lions paid $15 to use the Hall on October 12th and then $25 to use the Hall on their Charter Night, October 26th, 1966. When the Village Hall disappears from the downtown Victoria landscape in a few days, we might think about some of these things. Buildings can breathe a lot of life into a community. This one surely did, as we can see from some of the many photos I've taken over the years.
