The first time I heard the phrase “fish ‘n chips,” I was in San Francisco on Fisherman’s Wharf, visiting my Aunt Elaine who lived in a flat in that coastal city. The Wharf was famous for fish n’ chips, my aunt said, and so that’s what I ordered among the many food stands cluttering the area. No seating was available in this crowded and casual place so we strolled in the breezes of the bay, soaked up some sun, and watched people feed the pigeons. The fried parcels of fish were not in a sandwich and the chips were not potato chips but big doughy French fries. Not so bad but not so good either. I remember thinking “grease.”

But this is a column about a fishhook, not fish ‘n chips, so let’s get at it! Last month the fishhook was hidden on page 11 in the Century Wine ad. Among all the entires, ‘twas Elaine Scholl of Victoria whose name was pulled from the minnow bucket! Congratulations, Elaine (a popular name in this space today)!
