Ash Wednesday. Wednesday, March 5th. The first day of Lent, occurs 46 days before Easter. Ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday service of the previous year.
Daylight Saving Time. Begins Sunday, March 9th, when we advance clocks so that evenings will have more apparent daylight and mornings have less. Clocks are adjusted forward one hour.
St. Patrick's Day. Monday, March 17th. The day is named after Saint Patrick (385-461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. One of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.
Spring Begins. Thursday, March 20th. Also called the spring equinox. It's when days are close to 12 hours long with day length increasing as the season progresses. In spring, the axis of the earth is increasing its tilt toward the sun and the length of daylight in this hemisphere.
City Council Meetings. Second and fourth Mondays of each month. Monday, March 17th, and Monday, March 24th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers on Rose Street in downtown Victoria.
