Victoria Gazette - Calendar of Events

Ash Wednesday. Wednesday, March 6th. The first day of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter, Sundays not included. Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual discipline.

Daylight Saving Time. Begins Sunday, March 10th. At 2:00 a.m. clocks are turned forward one hour to Sunday, March 10th, 3:00 a.m. Sunrise and sunset will be about one hour later on March 11th than the day before. There will be more light in the evening.

City Council Meetings. Monday, March 11th, and Monday, March 25th. 6:30 p.m. at Victoria City Hall.

Lions Fish Fry. Friday. April 5th, at the Lions Park Pavilion. 4:30 to 8:00 p.m.

St. Patrick's Day. Sunday, March 17th. The day is named after Saint Patrick (385-461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. One of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

First Day of Spring. Wednesday, March 20th. Around March 20th or 21st each year, when sunrise and sunset are about twelve hours apart everywhere on earth. Also called the vernal equinox, it's when the sun sits directly above the equator on its apparent trip northward. Of course, the sun isn't moving; the earth is.

Full Moon. Wednesday, March 20th. The moon is full when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. When this occurs, the entire surface of the moon looks to be illuminated. The full moon occurs every 29.53058 days.

April Fool's Day. Monday, April 1st. Observed throughout the Western world. Practices include pranks and hoaxes on other people. Some say it's related to the turn of season. Others believe it started when switching from the Julian to Gregorian calendar.
