“I’m totally supportive of this,” said Councilmember Tom O’Connor who inquired about a question on the scholarship application. “What is the criteria that will be applied? Why is it necessary to solicit a family’s income?” Replied Ann Mahnke, Director of Parks and Recreation, “To get more at the need of a family. We wanted to keep it simple and have some flexibility in the program. I’d be looking at it on a case by case basis.” Said Councilmember O’Connor, “I think you’d be doing yourself a favor by having other criteria.” Councilmember Tim Amundsen, who serves as an ex-officio member of the Parks and Recreation Committee, stated, “Asking for household income is a typical standard. We had a hard time deciding if we should use the term scholarship or financial assistance.” Somebody making $200,000 and now unemployed or facing foreclosure might also apply. He advised putting it into Ann’s hands to come up with additional criteria for the program. Councilmember O’Connor made the motion to approve the program without delay, with additional criteria as Ann deems appropriate. It passed unanimously. Applicants must be residents of the City of Victoria, can be any age, and are applicable for program fees only.
MAYOR THUN WRITES LETTERS TO MINNESOTA POLITICAL POWERS Mayor Mary Thun wrote several letters to political office holders in Minnesota who helped attract funding for improvements that will be made to Highway 5. Some of the text of those letters is reported below: To State Senator Julianne Ortman: “Thank you so very much for your persuasive letters to Senators Klobuchar and Franken on behalf of the extension of U.S. Hwy 212 and the expansion and intersection work on State Highway 5. As you know, both of these projects are very much needed for the southwestern Metropolitan area. “In particular, Highway 5 has been the lifeline for Victoria’s businesses for many years. Highway 5 has become even more important because of the expansion of businesses in our City as well as the population growth that Victoria continues to experience ...” To County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik: “Thank you so very much for your April 20th letter to Peter Bell, Chair of the Metropolitan Council, in support of the extension of US. Highway 212 and the expansion and intersection work on State Highway 5. “On behalf of the City of Victoria, we very much appreciate your continued efforts and work to secure funding for upgrading Highway 5 to a four-lane highway ...” To State Representative Joe Hoppe: “Thank you so very much for your persuasive letters to Senators Klobuchar and Franken on behalf of the extension of U.S. Highway 212 and the expansion and intersection work on State Highway 5. Both have requested federal funds for these two important projects ...” To Senator Amy Klobuchar: “On behalf of the Victoria City Council, I want to thank you for your recent request for Federal funds for U.S. Highway 212 and State Highway 5. We are extremely grateful that you have taken the time to learn about our transportation needs in the southwestern Metropolitan area, which is an area that is experiencing growth, even through these very challenging economic times. “If granted, the $800,000 you have requested for Highway 5 will enable critical safety improvements to be made on the major lifeline to the cities of Victoria, Waconia, and Norwood Young America. Highway 5 carries the majority of traffic to current and expanding businesses in these cities. “Victoria’s Comprehensive Plan, approved by the Metropolitan Council, envisions tremendous growth within the next 10 to 20 years. These growth patterns are continuing to occur, which puts tremendous commuter stress on Highway 5 as people drive daily to their employment in Minneapolis/St. Paul and the immediate western suburbs. “If granted, the $500,000 request for Highway 212 will help enable the expansion project on this highway to continue. The number of cars that utilize this year-old four-lane freeway on a daily basis already exceeds expectations. Continuation of the Highway 212 project will provide improved safer transportation to all of the counties and cities located in the heart of Minnesota. “I look forward to meeting you and your staff, and I want to extend a personal invitation to you to visit the City of Victoria. We look forward to ongoing work with you.”
