LATEST ON HIGHWAY 5 RECONSTRUCTION

SIGNIFICANT WORK PLANNED FOR MAY 2012

City Engineer Cara Geheren, partner in Focus Engineering, reported that work on the major Highway 5 reconstruction project, much of which occurs within the city limits of Victoria, is scheduled to begin the week of May 1st.  The pre-construction meeting was held April 26th.

The significant work in May includes:  ►Reconstruction of the right turn lanes from westbound Hwy 5 to northbound Hwy 41, and from northbound Hwy 41 to eastbound Hwy 5.  Drivers will not be able to make these right turn movements during construction so local detours will be in place.  ►Construction of a new right turn lane from County Road #13 (Bavaria Rd) to eastbound Hwy 5.  CR 13 (Bavaria) will be closed just south of Hwy 5 so a local detour will be in place (along 78th Street and Hwy 5).

SHORTER SCOOP FROM APRIL

MAYBE A NEW PUBLIC WORKS SITE IN 2012

*Council approved city goals for 2012 as defined at a strategic planning session in February, reviewed in March, and reported in the April issue of the Gazette.  They include changing the mayor's term to four years, putting a question on the ballot this fall for residents to vote on changing Victoria's' form of government to city manager, accelerate extension of utilities to Lake Wasserman, acquire land and design for a new Public Works facility, prioritize parks projects.

*Council conducted a performance review of City Administrator Don Uram and found him to be approachable, respectful of opinions, an excellent example to a responsive staff, making Victoria a professionally managed city.

*Council accepted donations to the Fire Department from Tim Kaufhold ($250), Steve & Donna Leighton ($100), Community Living ($500).  Also, to Concerts in the Park from Floyd's ($125), Holiday Station ($100), Fresh Seasons ($150), Midwest Dental ($100), Signature Electric ($150), and to T-Ball and Coach Pitch from Sir Knights Cleaners ($100).

*Council approved the Separation and Release of Claims Agreement with Jylan Johnson, who served the City of Victoria for over 11 years as Finance Director/Treasurer.  According to the agenda statement, Jylan has decided to pursue other career opportunities, and she and the city have agreed to the terms of her resignation.

*Council approved the 2011 audited financial report as submitted by Aaron Neilsen, city auditor with Malloy, Montague, Karnowski, Radosevic.  Reported Mr. Neilsen, "The audit is unqualified, clean.  There are no instances of material weaknesses."
