Mother's Day. Sunday, May 13th. Officially established in 1914 when the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. On May 9th, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first national Mother's Day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in the war.

Property Taxes Due. Tuesday, May 15th. First half of property taxes due each year on May 15th. Then look forward to October 15th when the second half is due.

Memorial Day. Monday, May 28th. A U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It originated after the Civil War but was extended in the 20th century to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. It became an occasion for general expressions of memory of all deceased and extended into the Memorial Day Weekend.

Gazette Deadline. Deadline for the June issue of the Victoria Gazette is Monday, May 21st, or very nearby.

Victoria City Council. Monday, May 14th, and Monday, May 28th. Held each month on the second and fourth Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at City Council Chambers on Rose Street in downtown Victoria.

Hwy 5 Project. Construction begins the week of May 1st. ►Reconstruction of right turn lanes from westbound Hwy 5 to northbound Hwy 41, and from northbound Hwy 41 to eastbound Hwy 5. Drivers will not be able to make these right turn movements during construction so local detours will be in place. ►Construction of a new right turn lane from CR 13 (Bavaria Road) to eastbound Hwy 5. CR13 (Bavaria) will be closed just south of Hwy 5 so a local detour will be in place (along 78th Street and Hwy 5).
