To the Editor: I'm writing on behalf of the Early Childhood Advisory Council for Eastern Carver County Schools. We are hosting a free open house and party for families at the end of April and were hoping you would list our event in the Victoria Gazette. Thank you for your consideration. Amanda Arens Chanhassen, Minnesota
To the Editor: Happy Mother's Day to all the moms, including Editor Sue, her daughter Jenny, and her daughter in law, Nick's wife. My mom would be 88 this year on May 13th. She was born on Friday the 13th at 2:00 a.m. and, no, she didn't have good luck in her early 60's. She passed on at age 63 from lung and bone cancer and did not smoke. Her doctor thought it could be from secondhand smoke as she was heaping up meals for weddings, grooms dinners, bridal showers, and other events at the Chaska Legion. When I was in 1st or 2nd grade, I'd peel and slice eggs while Mom grinds up the sweet pickles and the dressing mix in the blender. I'd set the tables and my sister Julie got the salt and pepper shakers and cream and sugar packets. When I was a teenager, I'd fill coffee pots, wipe dishes, and get out the silverware. Other Legion gals helped Mom too. Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, corn, frozen bread made into loaves, apple pie from scratch -- guys from the factory where Dad worked in Savage and the bowling and golf teams would get treated to rib sticking suppers. The aroma of pie and bread would make its way upstairs to the hardware store and flower shop. Mom always made extra pies for them. When it was pork chops and sauerkraut, the smells billowed way downtown by the old Rex Theater that was on Chestnut Street. A bunch of old timers would play a card game in the winter called skat and one of the players, Marvin Schultz, used to bring crackers and cookies. He said it would be nice to feed the guys a good meal. Mom volunteered with chili, chicken soup, beef vegetable soup, cakes, homemade egg coffee, ham sandwiches. The leftovers Mom fed to bachelors at the bar. They were grateful for the homecooked meals and Mom charged very little. They'd say to me, "Your ma's a hell of a good cook." What is a mother? A heart that hears every unspoken need, wisdom to know when to quietly lead, hands that reach out healing and sharing, a mother is caring, with eyes that reflect every joy that you find, arms to encircle but never to bind, a talent for making the most out of living, a mother is giving, with a voice that can soothe, inspire or delight, a smile that keeps shining when things don't go right, an angel God sent us, and took to heaven above, a mother is love. To the Editor: Hi, Sue. Thank you for continuing to publish the Gazette, truly one of Minnesota's gems. I ran across my poem about Father Elstan yesterday. Got me to thinking about you. I miss him a lot. I would love for him to meet our grandchildren. Hope all is well. Jim Fahey Hutchinson, Minnesota
EDITOR'S NOTE: Hi, Jim. Always good to hear voices from the past. Did you hear there are no old people in heaven? Wonder what they did with Fr. E.
To the Editor: I don't recall how long I've received the Gazette, but it's kept me informed with so many issues. I was raised in Chanhassen and I have relatives and family in Victoria. It's amazing to realize that Chanhassen and Victoria were both small villages. Guess it's known as progress. The "V" sculpture design that you depicted in the April issue of the Gazette is impressive. The three guys' columns and Mike Wartman's articles are so witty and humorous. I enjoyed the Deli at Fresh Seasons Market in Victoria so hopefully people from all around will patronize the new store, Victoria's Market. The fishhook is on page 24, bottom row, the second spotted egg from the left, Please correct my last name on the Gazette mailing label. It's Kee, not Kes. Just a typo error the last two months on the name. The address is correct. Thanks again. Great newspaper. Gerene Kee Minnetonka, Minnesota
