Sophie is a Star. Son Nick turned into a camera aficionado upon the birth of his daughter Sophia on October 30th, 2008. His wife Jen submitted one of Nick’s recent pictures of Sophie playing in the leaves to WCCO-TV and it was chosen to be featured as part of their “On the Spot” segment during the weather report with Chris Shaffer on the evening news. As Jen emailed, “If you want to see the cutest baby on TV tonight, watch it.” Grandma Sue did just that, with her camera, of course. Happy First Birthday, Sophie. Love you lots. ~Grandma Sue
Barb and Sarg. At our October 14th regular meeting of the Victoria Lions, we were visited by Victoria resident Barb Denslow and her Leader Dog Sarg. Barb has macular degeneration, therefore was an eligible candidate for a guide dog. Residing in Sarasota, Florida, in the winter months, she was in close proximity to the Southeast Guide Dog School in Palmetto, Florida. Barb had to go through an extensive residency there while she was matched up and trained together with her beautiful young yellow lab. Leader dogs, like Sarg, require rigorous training while bonding with their partners. “When he’s harnessed to me,” quotes Barb, “he’s all business. Nobody must pet or communicate with him but me. However, when the harness is off, he’s just another fun loving affectionate dog.” Barb says that the Lions pay for everything at the Guide Dog School. The cost for Barb and Sarg’s training was about $40,000. Sarg has given Barb the ability to move about our community with relative ease. This, my friends, is what Lionism is all about. We serve. Caroline Julia Mowery. With all due respect to you, Grandma Sue, your grandchildren just moved one step down in the cutest grandkids in the world contest. Our only child Allison and her husband John Mowery brought this little girl into the world on Wednesday, October 14th, at 1:00 a.m. Caroline Julia Mowery weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. and was 20 inches long. Allison, John, and Caroline are all doing very well, and Grandma Janet is on Cloud 10 ... and beyond! Ain’t it the best? Dale Riley, President, Fresh Seasons Market Victoria, Minnesota
Senior goalie Katie Renner of Victoria was named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on October 6th. The conference awarded Renner for her outstanding play allowing only two goals and recording 17 saves against Bethany Lutheran College’s last two opponents. Katie is a two-time captain, four-year starter, and now three-time recipient of this award. Her consistency, positive attitude, and talents have helped the Bethany Vikings stay competitive this season. “Preparing for a game, I tend to visualize and pray a lot,” she said. “It is God who gives me the talents I have so it is my job to use them to His glory.” This season Katie has 81 saves and boasts a .771 save percentage. She will end her collegiate career this season holding every major goalkeeper record at Bethany, but there is one more accomplishment she would like to add to the list. “My personal goal is to be UMAC goalie of the year. It is my last year. What do I have to lose!” After graduating with a Sociology degree this spring, Katie has decided to follow a passion she discovered when volunteering at the Special Olympics and work with individuals with mental disabilities.
