THE SENIOR TSUNAMI HAS BEGUN

VICTORIA’S BABY BOOMERS ARE DIFFERENT

Several members of the Victoria for a Lifetime Commission attended the October 27th meeting of the Victoria City Council.  Spokesman chair and Victoria resident Linda McNulty spoke on behalf of the Commission during the Visitors Presentation.

"We have eight members and we need more," said Linda.  "We are the former Senior Commission.  I'd like to talk about some of the activities of the Victoria for a Lifetime Commission.  Our goal at the beginning was to advocate for senior independent living in Victoria.  We need rental apartments and one level units.  Most senior citizens will not stay in their bigger homes.  The senior tsunami has already begun."

Baby Boomers were born from 1946 to 1964.  The oldest Baby Boomers are now 68 years old.

Linda referred to some of the programs and activities of the Commission including Hello Neighbor, Memorial Community Trail Benches, WeCAB, Senior LinkAge Line, and Triad.  Some senior citizens need groceries delivered to their home.  Some need handy and readily available phone lists that they can see and read.  Senior citizens of Victoria are continually moving to other communities to find apartments and independent living.

Katie Boone, Supervisor of Carver County Public Health, also spoke to city councilmembers.  "We are the only county in Minnesota to have an Office of Aging," she said.

"Baby boomers in Victoria are different than in other counties," she said.  "The City of Victoria has the highest median value home and Victoria has the highest median value income."  She said the median value home in Victoria is $387,300.  The median value income in Victoria is $111,800.

"I support the work that has been done here," said Katie Boone.  "We will continue to work with the Victoria Commission."

Councilmember Joe Pavelko asked the Lifetime Commission for a prioritized list of their expectations and what city councilmembers should work on.

Replied Linda McNulty, "The housing issue is number one, without question."

Said Councilmember Jim Crowley, "My mother attempted to move here a few years ago but there was nothing for her.  She now lives in Chanhassen.  We've been emphasizing single family homes in Victoria in order to get businesses to locate here.     Now we have to shift our focus."

Mayor Tom O'Connor referred to the Lifetime Commission.  "This is a group of educated and dedicated people.  They are a pretty special group.  We're going to lose older residents who provide the glue and fabric of our community."
