To the Editor: Hi, Sue. How about our new Carver County Veterans Service Officer doing a column each month for the Gazette? Randy Maluchnik Carver County Commissioner Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: I hope you are doing well. My name is Gladys Rodriguez Rios. I am a student at B. Gale Wilson Elementary School in Fairfield, California. I am in the fifth grade and Ms. Andrus is my teacher. When I am not in school, I like to watch TV and chill. Ms. Andrus is helping my class do research on a state in the United States. I chose Minnesota. I was hoping that you could ask your readers to help. Any contributions are more than welcome and very much appreciated. They can send letters, information, artifacts, and anything else to: B. Gale Wilson Elementary, Gladys Rodriguez Rios/Joy Andrus, 3301 Cherry Hills Court, Fairfield, CA 94534. As you know, there is a lot of information available on the internet and in our library, but my teacher tells us that I will learn much more about Minnesota by asking some of the kind people who live there. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate that you took the time to read my letter. Sincerely, Gladys Rodriguez Rios Fairfield, California
To the Editor: Happy Thanksgiving to the Gazette Gang and fans of the Gazette. For a moist turkey, add plain vodka before it's baked. (A hint from a neighbor at Talheim.) Roller coasters are not for me. Back in the 1970's, when Valleyfair first opened, Mom and me, my younger brother Gerry, my two older nieces Sarah and Rachael and their mom Linda all went on the roller coaster. It wasn't an upside down type. That I wouldn't go near! No dice! Back then the roller coaster had a white frame and red cars. It was said it was from the old Excelsior Amusement Park but it wasn't. Mom was in her early 50's. I was 12. Gerry was 9. On we go! I didn't notice the high tracks. I just hopped on like everyone else. People are putting their arms up in the air. I couldn't figure out why, as this was my first time on those gut busters. It was fine until it's going up the track, and the arms go up. Mom even put hers up, and the speed increases gradually. Then, whoosh! Going about 80 mph. I am going nuts. Mom's enjoying the speedy ride, not me. My insides feel like they'll come outside my mouth. It did not stop after we got off the ride. I was getting shaky and the others were laughing like it's nothing. I preferred the Scrambler, Tilt a Whirl, and bumper cars. Things closer to the ground don't bother my insides. I found out the hard way why they put their arms up -- to feel the "rush" of the speed. My arms went down quick in that high speed and I held onto the handlebar hoping I wouldn't gag or lose my glasses. I'm still here 37 years later. Back then Valleyfair closed after Labor Day. Now it's closed in October and they have Halloween parties. I never knew Carrie Schmieg was my cousin Bob's daughter. She was probably born when I was in high school. I haven't seen Bob since the 1970's. Franny Schmieg is my mom's sister. Mom was the oldest, then Franny. 11 kids in Mom's family. Then Mom had 10 kids and Franny had 13. They had the most. Franny has the most grandkids and great grandkids. We have 10 grands and 3 greats. Kay Meuwissen Chaska, Minnesota
