CROWLEY AND STRIGEL RE-ELECTED TO THE VICTORIA CITY COUNCIL Elections are a numbers game. Numbers are vitally important and foretelling of the future. On the local level, no numbers are more important to us than those revealing the names of elected residents to the Victoria City Council. According to state and county election results, Jim Crowley and Tom Strigel were re-elected to the Victoria City Council. This is a signal that the City of Victoria will continue to grow along a fiscally conservative path, and yet include a progressive downtown agenda that works to enhance city amenities for residents and visitors, while keeping city taxes at bay. It’s a continuation of past policy for the City of Victoria. Before the polls opened at 7:00 a.m. on Election Tuesday, November 4th, 2014, there were 5,073 registered voters in Victoria, the sum total of Victoria’s three voting precincts. This year, 2014, a total of 3,397 Victoria residents voted on November 4th including 314 absentee/early ballots. That’s about 67% turnout of registered voters. Two years ago, in the 2012 general election, a total of 4,646 Victoria residents voted, including 422 absentee/early ballot voters, but it was a presidential election that year which attracts more voters all around. So the turnout of voters in Victoria in this off year was very good. More people have been voting early (prior to Election Day) than in the past, and that number has trended upward every year. According to information from Laurie Davies, Carver County Taxpayer Services Manager, only 174 Victoria residents cast absentee/early ballots in 2010, which was also a non-presidential election year like 2014. Stated Laurie, "The 2014 statistics for a general election are the first to be impacted by the legislative change allowing no-excuse absentee voting." It is difficult, if not impossible, to give an exact percentage of voter turnout in a community because some of the previously registered voters may be deceased and some may have moved away. In 2012, a presidential year, that number was 88%. According to unofficial election results, the three Victoria precincts garnered the following number of voters on Election Tuesday 2014. Where Victoria voted: Victoria Precinct #1: 719 (North of Hwy 5.) Victoria Precinct #2: 1,293 (South of Hwy 5 and east of County Road 11.) Victoria Precinct #3: 1,385 (South of Hwy 5 and west of County Road 11.) According to unofficial state and county results, the following votes were cast in Victoria, with ♦ indicating the statewide winners: How Victoria voted: U.S. Senator Mike McFadden (R): 2,180 ♦ Al Franken (DFL): 1,126 U.S. Rep. District #3 ♦ Erik Paulsen (R): 2,541 Sharon Sund (DFL): 811 State of MN Governor Jeff Johnson (R): 2,224 ♦ Mark Dayton (DFL): 1,051
